Andrew Garfield and a friend stand shoulder to shoulder in a white-tiled subway station, both wearing dark sunglasses and grinning wide. One has long, swept-back hair and a full beard; the other has a mass of dark curls and an arm draped over his companion's shoulder. The station's fluorescent light reflects in streaks along the tiled wall behind them.

good morning from the lakeside #Sunrise #GoodMorning #NewDayRising
Sunset over a still lake. Streaks of orange, coral and gold cloud spread across a gray-blue sky, brightest near the horizon on the right. A low line of dark trees crosses the middle of the frame, and the calm water below mirrors the glowing clouds in rippled copper and rose. Reeds stand in silhouette at the right edge. In the foreground, a muddy, weedy shoreline strewn with lily pads fades into near-black.

tbh a bit gobsmacked by the NYTimes' reveal of the no. 1 spot in their Best TV Shows of the 21st Century list
Ranked list entry on a dark background. A thin number 1 sits above the title "WONDER SHOWZEN" and the years "2005–2006." Below them is the show's logo on a white panel with rounded corners: a cartoon girl with pigtails rests her chin on her clasped hands, circled by the show's name in rainbow letters. Under the panel, the text begins "Described as a children's television series for adults, the show's format is a parody of educational PBS Kids shows such as Sesame Street and The" and the bottom edge of the image cuts it off.

yesterday on the way home from the beach we decided to check out the motherfuckin' shell museum … a few photos:
A curved gallery at the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum. A long, S-shaped glass case winds through the room in the foreground, lit from within, holding a row of conch and whelk shells that shrink from large to small. Beside it is a black bench with round blue cushions. Behind them are backlit wall cases full of hundreds of shells, under signs reading "Beauty & Diversity," "Time & Evolution," and "Sculptures & Colors." One visitor stands looking at a case.A three-bladed boat propeller stands on a post, its hub and the inner halves of its blades covered in dense clusters of small striped zebra mussels. The outer edges are still bare bronze with green patina. Behind it hangs a photo mural of a marina with docked boats and white pilings.A museum wall panel with a black-and-white photograph of a boy and a man in a park. Both wear Pearly King suits and caps covered with thousands of white pearl buttons sewn into grids, flowers, and diamonds, and the man wears a row of medals on his chest. The caption beside it reads: "LEFT: East End Pearly Kings. Photograph by Steve Lewis, ca. 1965. The 'Pearly Kings and Queens of London' represent a charitable tradition dating back to the 19th-century Victorian era, when an orphan named Henry Croft sewed himself a suit covered with pearl buttons to collect money for charity. Families of 'pearlies' continue the fundraising and good deeds to this day. Photo: Getty Images." A label below it is cut off at "BELOW: Freshwater Mussels and Mother-of-Pearl."A framed vintage newspaper clipping headlined "What The Teen-Agers Are Doing," with the subhead "Youth Has Hobby Of Collecting Sea Shells, Rocks." A grainy photo shows a young boy in a "Green Special" sweatshirt standing beside shelves of specimens. The article reads: "A veteran collector is Bill Hodge who has devoted a quarter of his life to collecting rocks. Bill, eight and one-half years old, started his rock collection at six and at seven began accumulating sea shells. He began his rock collection as most youngsters do, walking along the driveway and discovering pretty stones and pebbles, but he did not lose interest as is usually the case. He now has more than 300 stones. The collection of rocks and shells are arranged in orange crates made into stands and on small tables. His grandmother and aunt in Ashland, O., were responsible for his collection of sea shells. Last summer when he was visiting his grandmother and aunt in Ashland, his aunt gave him some shells to start a collection. She has been collecting shells for some time…"

HISTORIC
CAPTIVA CEMETERY

The Captiva Cemetery is closely associated with the history of Captiva Island. It served as a pioneer cemetery and contains the graves of many of the island's earliest settlers. The site originally formed part of a homestead established by William Binder in 1888. The first interment was the unnamed stillborn daughter of Herbert and Hattie Brainerd who, according to local tradition, was buried here in 1899. In 1900, Binder sold the parcel where the interments were buried to the Brainerds' ten year old daughter, Ann. In exchange for a gold ring, she received an annual birthday gift from her grandfather until her death one year later in 1901 at the age of 11 months. She was interred here with her sister. Other pioneers buried here, including the original homesteader William Binder, died in 1931. Also interred here are five members of the Ellsworth family, as well as veterans, including Washington Carter and Henry P. Knowles. One also here, Hattie Brainerd Bigham, maintained the site after the death of the Methodist Church in 1963. The church deeded the cemetery to Captiva Civic Association-the body which maintains it to the present day. The cemetery was listed on the National Registry of Historic Places in 2013.

has this ever been documented or is it apocryphal? I feel like it's the latter because the C&T song was only a modest hit in the UK rather than in the US where it was ubiquitous asking for my aunt via → lithub.com/behind-one-t...
Punk and post-punk had an almost reflexive distrust of the pop love song. Joy Division's first chart hit, however, wasn't born out of belligerence, but heartbreak. Yes, the song's title is a bit of a piss take: squeaky-clean husband-and-wife team the Captain and Tennille had a #1 hit in 1975 with "Love Will Keep Us Together," and while that song, or at least the optimism it channeled, did keep its performers together for nearly four decades, Curtis seems to have had little time for its saccharine "just say no" prescription for the seven-year itch.
