I'm like 6 years behind on this podcast. I just need a good afternoon or two to get caught up.

Honestly, the same reason I keep buying Monster Hunter games and not playing them, lol. I figure at some point it'll click for me. I can't recommend Dark Souls 1 to newbies at this point, but Elden Ring on S2 is genuinely much more friendly to newcomers than any before it.

I think part of my issue with MH is that I never really understood buildcrafting at all. Once I understood the math of Souls builds I got really into it. I'm not gonna claim one is better than the other because I don't feel I understood MH well enough to make that claim.

But also this might just be because I never really understood MH games. I have always found that series baffling, despite several attempts to engage with it. I'm sure Souls games feel the same to many. Playing through both series with @oksoda.bsky.social, I enjoyed the Souls games so much more.

I guess the main difference I'd observe is that I never felt like anything I was doing in MH combat was particularly precise, and it just felt like two sponges continually batting up against one another. Souls combat is high risk, high reward. MH combat is persistence and movement.

Having played basically all the Souls games, and just 20 hours or so of MH (Wild), I certainly don't think so. MH is largely hack, slash, and dodge, and fumble with menus to get out the right gear at the right time. Souls combat is pattern recognition and patience, and parry timing.

Admittedly I haven't tried to do a full playthrough of that since the 90s.

yeah, i just got a broken sword, i'm past the trial. if it had a quest log, that'd probably help me. i have an awful attention span and especially when i'm playing it handheld, i tend to lose focus a lot. if i hit a dead end, i often don't remember my immediate goals.

i'm still having trouble getting into chrono trigger. i don't understand why this game hasn't ever clicked for me. i still think that ff6 is by far the superior late snes rpg.

well now that i've spent the last 4 years investing heavily in being a pc gamer.... i'm pretty sure my pc is in dire need of a new GPU and that's a grand.

Not that you should have to, or that you should want to, but have you tried your account on a different console? That feels like a useful piece of troubleshooting info.

it just kind of feels like the way all of this is heading we'll all be installing Activision Windows 14 in 8 years.

i mean look i could probably make one of these that's just NES games but at some point you have to evaluate everything holistically.

maybe this is a flawed example (hello crunch) but there's never been a better example that we don't need a new generation of consoles than the fact that red dead redemption 2 came out EIGHT years ago and still is maybe the best looking game ever made.

started two new games this weekend, we'll see if either of them stick. chrono trigger (ds version) on the ayn thor - i've still never beaten this game silent hill f on steam - feels like a good start to spooky season

just finished my replay of metroid: samus returns. i don't think it's a great metroid game, but the action is really fun, it runs like a dream on the ayn thor, and it acts as a nice warm up to playing more metroid this january.

You should check out her expanded canon. It's all bangers, end to end. I really really love the title track off of "The Loneliest Time", and "After All" from "Day and Night" which is only about a week old.

It's been a couple years I think since I've played anything on a dual screened system. I'm just kind of really appreciating how nice it is to have the quick select for beams and map-at-a-glance. But otherwise, you're very right.

sometimes i wish they would so i'd have an excuse to finally finish chrono trigger, a game people keep suggesting is actually pretty good

see that's the thing too - they could stop making video games for YEARS and i'd still have more games in my immediate reach than i'll ever be able to play in the rest of my life.

i say that knowing full well that a similar thing could surely happen with steam too.

andrew @8bitacrylic.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
when people say they prefer console gaming to steam because "it just works" is this kind of thing entered into the equation?

yeah I think clicking in the right stick basically removes all navigation troubles but also it makes me super reliant on it.... I'd prefer something where I just sorta learn the layout over time. and that happened, but not til very late.

andrew @8bitacrylic.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
finally maybe around 8 hours in, it really clicked for me, i had many of the upgrades unlocked and it was just a thrill ride. not sure if i should try to place dead space 2 which will feel much, much older... or just wait for the next remake if it ever comes (probably won't)

andrew @8bitacrylic.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
i think part of it is the difficulty can be kind of punishing until mid-game. another part is that the entire ship feels like one big environment which is easy to get lost in. much like alien isolation, i found navigating one massive spaceship to be challenging.

andrew @8bitacrylic.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
honestly i'm not sure why it's always been difficult for this game to click for me. this was my third time trying to play this game (if you include my original attempt on xbox 360) and it never really hooked m.e
