Ada Palmer's Terra Ignota series fits the bill, though it's less funny and more philosophical.

Interesting, I appreciate the insight. I'd love to understand those dynamics better.

The meat of my genuine question: why would we only start seeing platform consolidation's impact on employment post-covid? How does this theory explain the near-flat line prior, despite the consolidation that was happening at the time?

Paul Johnecheck @7hird.dev · 4h
Platform consolidation, while awful, was in its swing long prior to 2020. TV show/movie streaming consolidation arguably peaked under Netflix in ~2014. Why would platform consolidation have hit a tipping point then? AI (+executive expectations for it) seems like a simpler explanation of this trend.

Indeed you shouldn't have to. I also agree that toxen-maxxing is wasteful. What to do when there's no good policy to be found? Yours is one understandable approach. Mine is simply to do the best I can with the cards I'm dealt, acknowledge the harms I contribute to, and advocate for good policy.

Woohoo! Very exciting, I can't wait to work with this. That said, I did search for this before posting, looks like there might be an issue with the registry's search feature.
Emdash registry search page for "standard.site", no results.

Who's going to be the first to ship a plugin integrating standard.site?
standard.site
Standard.site - One schema. Every platform.
Standard.site provides shared lexicons for long-form publishing on AT Protocol. Making content easier to discover, index, and move across the ATmosphere.

Indeed I do. I live in Detroit. I'm aware this sort of thinking is part of the problem, but individual action here changes next to nothing and costs me too much. We need good policy to solve coordination problems.

I am culpable in much the same way that my meat consumption and air/car travel make me culpable for climate change. I respect people for abstaining from those, but I will not be doing so personally. I will, however, advocate for policy that aims to fix those issues at a scale that matters.

I understand why you'd not want to contribute to those negative externalities while our institutions fail to prevent them. I respect that, but I don't think the miniscule difference my boycott would make here is worth the cost to me.

("all else held equal", ofc, it's not. A data center concentrates that energy demand, possibly straining transmission lines and burdening locals with costs. The real issue there is transmission capacity and local governance, not efficiently concentrating our compute to leverage economies of scale.)

Paul Johnecheck @7hird.dev · 28/09/2026
Cloud models are likely more energy-efficient per-prompt. All else held equal, your local prompts probably contribute more grid stress than they would in a DC. The water and noise concerns, where valid, need regulatory solutions and, in my opinion, do not disqualify data centers as a category.
130
Paul Johnecheck @7hird.dev · 28/09/2026
On the other hand, investing in the (expensive) hardware to run local models could act as insurance against situations where access to cloud compute is constrained (by a war in Taiwan, for example). Even that scenario, though, probably just means a temporary price shock.
020
Paul Johnecheck @7hird.dev · 28/09/2026
If you've got sensitive data that must be kept secure, local models are the answer. However, a data center somewhere with cheap electricity is probably always going to be more cost effective. For most, the tiny marginal benefit you withhold from OpenAI isn't worth the added cost to you.

Must be? Not at all. But it might be, as VC investing is a question of who commands power and resources. It's possible that such capability remains in human hands long after AI surpasses us in everything else.

To me, the puzzles were never much more than obstacle between me and getting the computer to do what I imagined. I won't miss them much. Now, the puzzles always were the the best part of developing of corporate software that you don't care about. Sad to see people realize they hate their new roles.

Absolutely. The answer for maximum interop is tools like @aaronstevenwhite.io's panproto.dev that allow for easy translation between similar lexicons.

This is "on the roadmap". github.com/bluesky-soci... Above is a proof of concept for this very feature, made by a Bluesky employee, on an extension to atproto that drops full openness with the explicit aim of supporting this. Hate Bluesky if you want, but at least know what you're talking about.

I have plenty of complaints about Bluesky. But sorry dude, "they won't ever build private accounts" is just not one based in reality.
100
Paul Johnecheck @7hird.dev · 16/09/2026
Put your money where your mouth is. You seem certain Bluesky won't implement meaningfully private accounts. They will. Define what you'd count as private accounts and let's put some cash on the line.

Paul Johnecheck @7hird.dev · 16/09/2026
Dude. It got hidden because your entire comment was "you are naive". That's neither polite nor a meaningful addition to the conversation.
110
Paul Johnecheck @7hird.dev · 16/09/2026
If you think the bluesky team isn't building private accounts, you don't understand them at all. Want to bet on whether private accounts on Bluesky will exist a year from now?

Lol just wait a few months, this is the proof-of-concept for what you picture. That's exactly what they've been upgrading atproto to support.

Why shouldn't I register another domain name?

I do not think it a coincidence that UX design remains a weak point of today's AI systems.

Paul Johnecheck @7hird.dev · 15/09/2026
I would consider the ability to build excellent user experiences for novel systems strong evidence that the builder HAS internal experience.

I'll go further. "I'm basically just a hamster on a wheel, checking boxes, getting tickets done with no real purpose". Does typing the code really instill more purpose into the work? Or did that just distract you from its lack of meaning? Find some real purpose, brother. You'll be happier for it.

I feel for you and acknowledge your experiences, but you went too far when you projected them onto others and concluded that "when you build software with AI, it leads to worse software". That may be true for you, but your claim that it's true for everyone is unfounded and insults me and my craft.

Care to elaborate? My understanding is that those IP addresses are inherently public knowledge. Naturally any service can get DDOSed, but anything beyond that sounds like a vulnerability we need to fix.

Hmm. I'll be honest, I rather like the feature for my own experience. You're right, though, that information like this being readily visible can fuel harassment. While I understand and respect other opinions, I strongly dislike the idea sacrificing my UX because some people suck.

Agreed. In a world where anyone can spew out mostly-working but mediocre experiences, an eye for quality and care enough to achieve it will separate the cream from the slop.
