This El Niño is a warning. As the planet warms, the risks to communities, economies, and supply chains across the globe become harder to ignore. The answer isn’t more fossil fuels - it’s clean energy, warmer homes, and restored nature.

Putting climate firmly back at the centre of the UK’s political conversation. Zack Polanski tops the Politics & Government section of The Independent’s Climate 100 list.
ZACK POLANSKI NAMED THE UK’S TOP POLITICAL CLIMATE LEADER

The Independent write-up in full:

“Since becoming leader of the Green Party in 2025, Zack Polanski has made the links between climate change, inequality and the cost of living central to his politics, arguing that environmental action must also make people’s lives better.

This summer, as the UK faced its hottest summer ever and wildfires swept across the UK and the rest of the globe, he called for oil and gas companies to pay higher taxes to fund climate adaptation. That is alongside investment in cooling homes and public spaces and bringing water companies into public ownership.

More recently, he's taken aim at the rapid expansion of AI data centres, calling for a halt to new developments because of their huge demands for electricity and water at a time of increasing climate pressure. The Greens have proposed a moratorium on all but small, community-focused centres.

Polanski describes his approach as ‘eco-populist’, seeking to connect environmental concerns with frustrations over housing, bills and wealth inequality. His rise has helped propel the Greens into their strongest electoral position yet – and put climate politics firmly back at the centre of Britain’s political conversation.”

Is it "pragmatic" to approve new oil and gas drilling in the North Sea that could cost between £119 billion to £336 billion in climate damage? Sounds more like climate and economic vandalism.

Small businesses are feeling the squeeze whilst large banks are raking in obscene profits. It's time for windfall tax on big bank profits to end rip-off Britain.

45 minutes ago - Saturday 04 July 2026 09:00You have my promise that, as long as I'm in politics, I'II stand every day for the rights of my LGBTQ+ siblings - even when that means swimming against the tide. All too often, the party side of Pride shrouds the protest - and that's really damaging. It's how we end up in the strange place of politicians not showing solidarity with or taking meaningful action for trans people, who are facing a devastatingly uncertain time right now.
Yet those same politicians attend parties, show up at photo opportunities and claim to be allies.Pride has come a long way since then, becoming a global movement to celebrate LGBTQ+ communities. But right now it feels particularly important to remember its roots. There's a lot to protest about right now. Rising homophobic hate crimes. Vicious attacks on trans people's rights to freedom and dignity. Homophobia creeping back into public life as right-wing politicians embolden bigots. We live in a moment where an LGBT+ venue can be the victim of a horrific arson attack - and yet, other than some brief headlines, there's very little outcry.
