In 1968, Douglas Engelbart revolutionized computing by showing the mouse, hypertext, and collaborative computing in "The Mother of All Demos". Most of his ideas are now part of everyday computing, but one device—the keyset—failed to catch on. Let's look at Engelbart's demo and the keyset. 1/N
The keyset is an input device with five long, flat keys, similar to piano keys but thinner. The device and the keys are beige. A braided wire cord exits the device at the top.An image from Engelbart's demo. At the top, the screen shows lines of text. The bottom of the image shows Engelbart at a special desk. The desk has a keyboard in the center with a keyset on the left and a mouse on the right.

I just parked my "prehistory of a technomad" on YouTube, a little under 7 minutes. Plan is to do additional videos spanning the whole adventure epoch (including Deep Geekery), with the main body of the story continuing in text. youtu.be/-RzBPcDYCF0 (And I'm back to work on Substack!)

it took a month, but i've reverse engineered this IBM MCGA gate array chip. 17,000 transistors. 768 gates. over 1200 nets.
a photo of a chip overlaid with red and blue wiring in CADa jumbled pile of logic gates on a very large schematic. it's totally unreadable.

This is a rare beast, it's my Arraid EID-1C SMD Disk Emulator. It's configured to emulate a Fujitsu 14" M2294 330Mb SMD 'Winchester' disk used on my #Quantel DPB-7001. Originally it would have a 3.5" SCSI disk, but this one uses a SCSI CompactFlash drive instead 🤘

What is the origin of the word "mainframe"? Digging through archives, I traced it back to 1953. The IBM 701 computer was built from "frames": power frames, a storage frame, a drum frame, and the main frame. This 1953 drawing from the Installation Manual shows the dimensions of the "main frame". 1/n
A line drawing of the IBM 701's "main frame", showing its physical dimensions and how the frame swings open. The drawing is dated 3-4-53. The drawing is from the document "Type 701 EDPM Installation Manual", obtained from the Computer History Museum archives.

today we fired up the old Xerox Alto (the earliest computer with a graphical OS) and dumped a disk pack that we hadn't imaged before.
portrait-mode monitor that is blank, but the cursor is in the shape of a heart symbol. below the monitor is a "keyboard garage" with a keyboard pulled out in front of it. it's got no numeric keypad and looks a lot like typewriter keys.front panel of a Xerox Alto with a Diablo disk drive. A disk pack is installed in the drive. there's a row of four light bulb indicators on the right side, and one of them is lit. Below the disk drive is a front panel grille with rows and columns of slots. the entire chassis rides on small wheels, one of which is visible on the right side. also on the right is a rack of extra disk packs, which are white and round and about a foot in diameter.

Having a lot of fun casting replicated freeform optics from a CNC & post processed tool. I wanted to save money coating, so I tried a sterling silver target in the sputter coater and the results were awesome. A little silver made it around my stencil, but it's easy to buff off.

Oh, hello old friend. Glad to see you working again. We owe you so much.
This is a photo of a 1975 vintage Intel 8085 development board. It’s a very simple computer designed basically as a marketing demo for Intel’s (then) newest and most powerful CPU. It is a beautiful vintage circuit board in green epoxy with wonderful vintage DIP chips all over it and a very chunky red 8 segment LED display. When you turn it on it says “80 85” which I find so charming.

This is a DEC VT-100 terminal. It was built in the late Permian period. I used one in grade school. It was the first computer I touched. It’s a dumb terminal meaning it needs to be attached to a mainframe computer to do anything interesting. So there’s not much interesting going on. The text in the screen implies that more interesting things may happen soon. So stay tuned. Happy new year. Much love.
