My latest publication has arrived: I contributed an essay on Lincoln and the Border States to the Wiley Companion to the 16th President. It was an honor to stand among a great gathering of talented scholars.

#hatm oh I can’t wait for tonight’s showing of one of the greatest movies ever made: James Cameron’s Aliens. Please see my Blu Ray in my player and Alien movie collection, including the Alien Isolation game (great looking but way way way too hard).

I'm not in the least bit surprised. #hatm Here was my lunch yesterday.

Last year, I bought two bookshelves at IKEA to house my DVDs and VHS tapes. My tv rests on a large chest containing many more.

Want to avoid boredom? Read a book. I just returned from a trip where I had delayed flights on both ends. A good long book passed the time quietly. #hatm Here's a picture of me on that trip, with my own book.

Unfortunately, I cannot watch Suffs with #hatm tonight. I do not have access to PBS. In your honor, I will watch a certified classic of women in film: Chantal Ackerman's Jeanne Dielman (1975). If you havent seen it, it's a masterpiece. 1/2

I have not seen 48 Hrs before so this will be interesting. 1) Lethal Weapon series. Hard to top that. Hot Fuzz was also very good. 2) mismatched personalities, ludicrous caper, boss always unhappy, but they get the job done. 3) Pizza, specifically this one. #hatm

Hey #hatm peeps. I’m ready for tonight’s showing of Ghostbusters. I first saw it in 1984 - three times in fact. I dug around this week and found the Blu Ray. I’m dining on this pizza tonight. Have fun!

Here’s one I made: plain old fashioned Walmart ingredients. I have had to stop eating them for health reasons. Oh they were good. #hatm

This was the most expensive and labor intensive meal that I had last year: 12 ounce steak, lobster tail, lobster topping, and a baked potato. $75 USD. Oh it was great. Christmas special at my favorite restaurant. #hatm

I have the DVD for this movie so yay. 1) The Gypsy Moths, a 1969 movie about parachutists in Kanas that he made with Scott Wilson and Burt Lancaster. 2) What if it's The French Connection 2? 3) Pizza! Spicy Chicken Deluxe with jalapenos. #hatm

Final Thoughts: Sisu is a Finnish war revenge movie. A veteran turned gold prospector is attacked by Germans. He seeks and gets revenge. It's what one expects from this type of film, blunt and obvious. I liked it! Suomi! Suomi! Suomi!

Scott A. MacKenzie @5thborderstate.bsky.social · 06/04/2026

Suomi! #hatm

I saw a Stuka at the Swedish Air Force Museum. This isn't it, but it is a Finnish Air Force Brewster Buffalo from WW2. Yes they used that insignia before the war. It was on their regalia until very recently too. #hatm

A journalist once asked a Finnish soldier where he placed his faith as he went to the front line. He replied "Jumala ja Mannerheim." "God and Mannerheim." Here's the most famous soldier of them all, Simo Hayha, the legendary White Death. Killed 505 Soviets. #hatm

Marshal of Finland C. G. E. Mannerheim, Finland's military leader in WW2. Ironically he barely spoke any Finnish, but few minded. Swedish was common enough, and he had the unshakeable faith of the whole country. #hatm

#hatm I'm so looking forward to watching Sisu tonight. I visited Finland in June 2015 and fell in love with the place, even its funky language. En puho suomea! Here are some of my pictures from Helsinki.

I haven't seen this movie before - didn't even know about it until last week. But I'm always willing to watch what #hatm shows. 1) Too many to list 2) this pizza. Take a good look before it's all gone. I buy them at $3.50 each so it's a much better value than any restaurant.

I love this movie. Saw it in the theater 20 years ago. See my pictures in the next post. #hatm 1) Connery. So cold-blooded. 2) Vodka Martini shaken not stirred, natch 3) Chicken wings tonight, see below:

I think I have only seen this movie once before. #hatm 1) TV = All in the Family, natch. 2) Wow, so many to choose from. I'd say Stand By Me. Reiner aced it so much that Stephen King asked him to direct Misery, which is another classic. 3) This pizza:

I have never heard of Lion before. 1) I don't think I've ever read a book on Australia's history beyond a general text on Gallipoli. I likewise can't say I read much about India. 2) This spicy chicken pizza with jalapeno peppers and hot sauce. #hatm

I think that I saw this movie in the theater in 1994. Wow, time flies. 1) I haven't seen any of John Krasinski's or Chris Pine's versions; Ben only made one, which was okay. Ford is always good but I'm going with Alec Baldwin because I love Hunt for Red October 2) this Pizza #hatm

I haven't seen this before, but I suspect it is very similar to most films of this genre. 1) I do not drink alcohol at all. 2) Stripes (on Prime) 3) Pizza again

I haven't seen this movie nor did I even hear about it until #hatm announced it. 1) We need a Calvin Coolidge movie. 2) Pizza, specifically this one: pepperoni with jalapenos.

I'll have to find out some other day. I don't have access to tonight's #hatm program. In happier news, I bought two bookcases today from IKEA. I used them to present my many Blu Rays, DVDs, and VHS tapes. They all fit too. See for yourselves! See you next week, #hatm gang :)
