...so i was double checking something, looking through freddy bailey's scans, when i found this perplexing page. why can't sega research ever be cut and dry lol
so, originally i had conjectured that you could roughly date some old sega print material based on the wordmark used, but this sega nevada price list from 1958 uses both! i'll write more on this soon.

the other reply said 1932 was the year stated because i couldn't find where i put that screenshot and i mixed up the year - 1932 was an important year for both Irv and pingames. whoops

[Austin Powers voice] WAIT A TICK

The London Funland closed in 2011, and machines from it and SegaWorld migrated to other Bromley-owned arcades in the area. The Chicago location was gone by 2003.

Funland operated a second location in '93, in London's Trocadero building, also sporting an R360. Bob Deith's Sega Europe leased part of the building for the infamous SEGAWORLD LONDON from '94 to '99, and after that venue closed part of the space was absorbed to expand Funland.

Funland was operated through a subsidiary of Bromley Inc, which itself was a subsidiary of Sega S.A. and distantly Club Specialty Overseas Inc. Marty Bromley was still attending shows on behalf of Bromley Inc. more than fifty years after Service Games was formed!

In 1993, the Funland arcade opened in the Brickyard Mall in Chicago. It boasted 16,000 square feet of floor space, including indoor bumper cars, a SEGA R360 motion simulator, and an entire floor geared for younger audiences. (small thread)

Bonus, here's a couple photos of Irv from '39 and '41 respectively.

And then "prior to entering the coinop field" might instead refer to before he formed Irv Bromberg Co, allowing overlap of the two timespans. Still, multiple things don't quite line up here, I wish more was known about his story, esp. since Service Games had claimed 1932 was the start of SEGA.

That said, the 1930 census lists Irv's job as salesman of chewing gum. It's possible that being prez of Greenpoint was a passive job while he did jobbing on the side, or Senate got the year he left wrong. Twelve years from new years '36 would place the start in '23, when he became president...

The next company he made was Bromberg Co. in late November '31, which reincorporated as Irving Bromberg Co. a few days later on December 2nd. It incorporated a third time in January '33 under sales manager Eddie Blumenthal as Irv prepared to go west.

...except in the 1920 census, his profession was given as salesman of glasswares (house). He was one of the three founders of the Greenpoint Motor Car Corp in '22, selling Durant cars, and took over as president the following year. US Senate '71 states he remained until 1930.

In January 1936, the Coin Machine Review asked a few stars of the biz what they did before jobbing. Irv gave a vexing response: 12 years in coinops, and 5 years selling cars before that. This would hypothetically cover his entire adult life since graduating high school in 1918... (thread)

The roughly month-long delay in the new shell gave the NiGHTS team time to polish up the game. And that wasn't even the first major delay and redesign the project had!

Beep21 recently put out a series of articles about the MaruCon's development process - did you know that after orders were sent out for initial manufacturing run, Yu Suzuki complained that the controller didn't have symmetrical grips, triggering an urgent remodel of the shell?

Thanks to the International Arcade Museum Library's trade magazine holdings I've been able to glean further information about the SEGA 1000 Stereo Jukebox. Rather than poast things piecemeal here, this will be the topic of my next article on Note. Stay tuned!

...oops, i merged the bullet points together.. MCC coop on xbox does require a paid tier too but steam doesn't! par for the course i suppose

for coop MCC on Steam, it only requires a free tier gamertag and a steam account... wild that they've pivoted to *two paid subscriptions* on PS

Thanks, I appreciate it! For this trip I'm specifically hunting down a reprinted ad for Uta Matic, and looking for the context of its reprinting (jp ad in a german mag? any mention of Beromat?), but more generally my domain of research is SEGA and its member companies from '46 to '91ish.

Now a week out before my planned trip and they're still unsure if they can accomodate me looking through a couple books. I first reached out in *November*. Really makes me wish that electro-mechanical goods publications were within @gamehistoryorg.bsky.social 's scope lol, this is making me anxious!

The medal token should have been a big tipoff, as medal games hadn't been popularized until Sigma started the movement in '71, with Sega Enterprises taking notice in '75.

tripwalker's article uncovered some information about Kobe's sega, including the discovery that their headquarters closed down some time between april 2017 and april 2018, with google streetview embeds of the location

You even see sega using the exact Mills owl insignia, which they got called out for. (Westlee was part of the Sega group.)

2Tie @2tie.bsky.social · 04/04/2026
The font and owl insignia are consistent between the two, but have glaring differences to known dated documents from the 50s sega.

2Tie @2tie.bsky.social · 04/04/2026
I have incorrectly attributed these two images to the Service Games Japan of the '50s that later became Sega Enterprises. They are actually from Kobe's Service Games Japan, which operated from ~1971 - 2018.

As I understood it, your pinball history part 1 article (and the hard historia interview it cites) states the development department had 20 people in total upon sato's inauguration, with the pinball team starting at three and later growing to seven.

Sega had at least seven of 'em in Japan, unknown how many were at Gremlin at the time. [pic sourced from their 1980 company profile]

Seems like the Annex building was previously a CRT assembly building, which would explain the freight elevator and the builtin warehouse space.

And then after Gremlin's acquisition, Sato was one of the employees sent overseas for a programming boot camp at Gremlin's cali office. Their development system was repurposed for the G80's offerings.

Sato only belonged to the Pinball team for a couple years, before he became involved in reverse engineering Pong and working out changes, the creation of Sega's video division.

2Tie @2tie.bsky.social · 18/03/2026
After joining on at Sega's development division, Sato was assigned to Pinball, a three man team (unsure if all three of the engineers hired as part of Sato's inductee class were the pinball team) with Shikanosuke offering guidance. Their priority was making tables more exciting than any other.

Curiously, an archive of Sega S.A.'s 90s flash website suggests a start year of 1923 - when Irv Bromberg left his used car sales job to be a vending distributor, the most generous interpretation of the timeline by far.
