Columnist Greg Stejskal Reviews New Book: ‘The Department of Revenge: How Trump Took Control of American Justice’
_The writer, an FBI agent for 31 years, retired as resident agent in charge of the Ann Arbor office in 2006. He has a law degree from the University of Nebraska College of Law.He is the author of “_ _FBI Case Files Michigan: Tales of a G-Man._“ ### **By Greg Stejskal** A new book, “The Department of Revenge: How Trump Took Control of American Justice,” chronicles the transformation of the Department of Justice under the Trump administration from an entity that was semi-independent of White House influence to a weapon of revenge wielded by Trump and his minions. In so doing, the Trump administration is abrogating many of the safeguards put in place following Watergate. The author, Devlin Barrett currently writes for the New York Times and has covered federal law enforcement for more than 25 years. He began his career in journalism at the NY Post and has reported for Associated Press, Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post. He has been part of four Pulitzer Prize winning teams. I have closely followed the Trump administration’s efforts to control and change the DOJ since the inauguration. But it has been difficult with so much happening. It seems to follow Steve Bannon’s plan to “flood the zone” with information and disinformation making it almost impossible to keep up. Barrett’s book has focused on the changes at the DOJ/FBI and provides a readable first draft of history putting the events and characters in context. Barrett also guides the reader through some of the legal procedures like how federal grand juries operate. Criminal law and procedure can sometimes be esoteric, but he has made it understandable for the layman. Barrett with his long-term reporting of DOJ/FBI, has captured the culture and ethos of the DOJ attorneys and FBI agents. In his “acknowledgments” Barrett wrote: “The people who deserve the deepest thanks for this book would suffer the most for being listed here. Instead of names, I will acknowledge the character of those who gave this work meaning. They are Americans who took the oath to support and defend the Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic.” “They are Americans who know that being an officer of the court demands honesty, integrity, and ethical conduct, not only when it is easy but when it is hard.” “They are Americans who disagree on many things, but who share that the way to resolve disputes is not through lies, threats, or self-serving backroom deals.” “Many of those people never considered until 2025, that their oath ‘to bear true faith and allegiance’ to their country might mean risking their livelihoods. Nevertheless, when confronted with difficult moral choices (and some that were not difficult), they made sacrifices to defend principles that protect the American people. Even more than the ‘rule of law’ or ‘norms’ — two concepts that probably don’t poll well or get many clicks — they stood up for basic human decency and common sense. Thank you.” Author Devlin Barrett (NY Times photo) The overarching theme of the book is Trump’s & his acolytes’ efforts to make the DOJ the Department of Revenge – Trump’s means of retribution. But a subplot to this retribution is the efforts to change the investigative and prosecutive priorities of the DOJ/FBI. The priorities have been: protecting national security, i.e., counterterrorism, counter-espionage, cybersecurity; public corruption; white collar crime like sophisticated frauds; organized crime. Investigating and prosecuting these crimes is complicated and generally requires long-term commitment. Trump’s revenge agenda prioritizes prosecuting his perceived enemies and reverses the traditional criminal process of investigating the crime and obtaining evidence proving the crime and identifying those that perpetrated it. The revenge agenda identifies the perceived enemy then seeks to find a crime for which he/she can be prosecuted. Most of what the DOJ/FBI does occurs outside of Washington DC. Every day all over the country, assistant US attorneys and FBI agents are investigating and prosecuting cases that have no direct connection to what’s going on in the Capitol. This is where I spent most of my career in what we referred to as “the field.” But the priorities and culture are determined by the leadership in Washington. In this administration, agents and AUSAs have been fired or forced to resign because they were investigating and prosecuting legitimate cases involving members of the current administration or its supporters. This skews the mission to follow the facts without fear or favor. Now fear and favor are counter-balanced on the scales of justice. Barrett quotes from Maureen Comey’s farewell letter to her Justice Department colleagues after being fired without cause by Trump: “If a career prosecutor can be fired without reason, fear may seep into the decisions of those who remain. Do not let that happen. Fear is the tool of a tyrant, wielded to suppress independent thought. Instead of fear, let this moment fuel the fire that already burns at the heart of this place. A fire of righteous indignation at abuses of power. Of commitment to seek justice for victims. Of dedication to truth above all else.” Maureen Comey is the daughter of James Comey, the former director of the FBI fired by Trump in his first term. She was also the principal prosecutor of Ghislaine Maxwell who was convicted for being a facilitator for Jeffrey Epstein’s sex trafficking activities. And now we see what seems to be clear violations of federal law, like blatant corruption and unjustified homicides committed by federal agents, that are not even being investigated, let alone prosecuted. Perhaps the only saving grace which is of little solace is that sycophancy doesn’t equal competence. Most of the prosecutions of Trump’s enemies have failed, not even getting past the grand jury stage. Unfortunately, the incompetence further damages the creditability of the Justice Department and the FBI. Every American should be concerned about the Trump administration’s attack on justice. Devlin Barrett’s book is excellent, but there will need to be a sequel – hopefully with a happy ending. Share on Facebook Tweet

malwarebytes.com
Rarlab has released a new version of the popular WinRAR tool to patch a vulnerability that can be abused in remote code execution attacks. The issue is fixed in WinRAR 7.23, but users must install the new version manually because WinRAR still does not offer automatic updates. They also need to make sure they download the version that matches their system and language preference. There are five operating system to choose from (Windows, macOS, Android, Linux, and FreeBSD), which shouldn’t be too hard. More people will struggle with choosing 64 bits, 32 bits, or ARM, which requires checking their system specifications. The vulnerability, tracked as CVE-2026-14191, affects the way WinRAR and UnRAR handle RAR5 recovery-volume (.rev) files, which are optional files used to help repair damaged or incomplete archives. This means an attacker can craft a set of two or more `.rev` files that make WinRAR write data outside the memory it has allocated. In simple terms, the malicious recovery volumes can trick WinRAR into writing data just past the end of a memory buffer, corrupting its own data, which attackers may be able to exploit to run malicious code on the victim’s computer. According to the European Vulnerability Database entry EUVD‑2026‑40869, the bug is a variant of the 2023 flaw tracked as CVE-2023-40477, which was also found in the recovery volume handling code. ## No automatic updates The problem with the lack of automatic updates is that users first have to become aware that a new version is available. Although there are third-party tools that can monitor this for system administrators, most home users risk missing it. A 2025 vulnerability in WinRAR was exploited by Russia-aligned groups against Ukrainian organizations long after the vulnerability had been patched. ## How to stay safe Besides installing the updated version of WinRAR and/or UnRAR, there are a few general ways to stay safe. * Don’t open unsolicited attachments unless you can verify their origin through an independent channel. * Use an up-to-date, real-time anti-malware solution to keep malware off your devices. * For system administrators: Treat WinRAR as optional software. If users do not need it for business reasons, remove it through your software inventory or asset management system to shrink the attack surface, or use a suitable tool to notify you promptly about updates. * * * **We don’t just report on threats—we remove them** Cybersecurity risks should never spread beyond a headline. Keep threats off your devices by downloading Malwarebytes today.

Why turning off screens is so hard for children – and four tips to make it easier
Steven Howard, _University of Oxford_ Image: Annie Spratt - Unsplash The challenges and consequences surrounding children’s screen use are a leading concern for UK families. One especially difficult challenge is the resistance, arguments and emotional battles – “techno-tantrums” – that can follow when parents ask children to end a screen-based activity or refuse children’s requests to start one. Most families with young children experience these at least occasionally and, for some, frequently. It’s especially hard for children to move away from a screen because digital content is designed to be engaging. Content developers’ monetisation models usually require this to justify the expense to develop that content. At a minimum, this typically involves using bright colours and fast-paced content with quick and unpredictable transitions, as well as other cues to capture and hold attention. Algorithms ensure you mostly see what would be most interesting to you. More contentiously, many examples of digital content for children include features that, in the most generous interpretation, persuade children to make choices they might not otherwise have made and may not be in their interests. Examples include a beloved character encouraging the child to select a particular in-app option, exploiting the child’s emotional attachment with that character. Limited-time pay-to-play offers are presented to compel a quick decision, when slower deliberation may have led to a different choice. A consequence is that children’s digital activity no longer unfolds solely based on their preferences and interests. Instead, digital design features aim to capture and hold children’s attention, motivate certain decisions over others, and, after digital activity has ended, hasten their return. This battle between the gratification of continuing screen use or putting down the device when it is required or in one’s best interest is not unique to children. Parents report high rates of technoference – when their own digital activity impedes, interrupts or worsens interactions with their child. Children have even less ability to resist these lures and tactics to engage and sustain their attention. This does not mean families should resign to a losing battle, or that all digital activity is inherently bad. There are things we can do to help, and at the same time establish foundations for children to better self-regulate their own digital activity and prepare for the digital demands in their future. ## 1. Give slower-paced options Provide children with digital options that have slower paced, educational content and more active engagement. Be wary of apps, platforms and programs high in persuasive design features. This will ensure children engage with digital content better aligned in content, pace and design to their developmental needs. Some reputable sources offer expert reviews and ratings of digital content for children. ## 2. Join in with children’s screen use One of the largest reviews of research to date found a small association between children’s screen time and negative outcomes. Notably, though, some effects flipped positive when adults were engaged alongside children. Using a screen together helps families understand what their children are viewing and doing on digital devices. It also allows for shared interests, experiences and conversations during and after digital activity. ## 3. Be careful using screens as a distraction Try to limit giving children digital devices to keep them occupied or calm them down. Children’s ability to deal with boredom, frustration, excitement or other emotions at times that might be especially undesirable to parents – in a doctor’s office, at a restaurant or on a long car ride – requires that they encounter and learn to manage these emotions. Children won’t learn to manage challenges they haven’t encountered. ## 4. Establish a routine Set clear and shared expectations of your child’s digital activity ahead of time and apply these consistently. This might be set periods in which digital activity is more commonly permissible (such as a family movie night), a restricted range of digital options from which they can choose, and a consistent location and duration of play. Have a plan and let the child know what comes next. Having even a short yet fun transitional activity can help: an obstacle course, a game or asking your child questions about their interests related to the digital content. Provide warnings in the lead-up to transition. Give them one or two warnings before the end of the digital play, reminding them what will follow next: “In five minutes we will turn this off and get ready for the park.” Where possible, give children some control over the transition. No one likes having to stop before (what feels like) an activity’s natural completion. Children might be given some control over this by being given the responsibility to turn off the device when time is up or having a say in what follows next. New routines are rarely immediately effective or without growing pains as families adjust. However, consistent use of approaches like these are reported to help children’s transitions away from digital devices, while also creating the conditions for beneficial digital engagement.
