Today (for Cat) I sang his nickname (Ki-ki Butthole) to the tune of Handel's Hallelujah and yes, also, I am a very serious scientist. Apologies to my family. Except Ki-ki Butthole, of course.

This is such a beuatiful book. If you like dystopian/climate fiction/science fiction with a poetic bent and can handle stories of pandemic and death and grief (with a lovely helping of hope and connection), this delivers.

A dark shadowed figure in silhouette with a small smile stands in front of lines representing the trans flag. Red text at the bottom of the image states "I WILL OUTLIVE YOU". At some point in time, this image was marked as a threat on other social media, but I'm pretty sure it's just an affirmation.

Shifting myself away from short-form social media sites like FB, IG, and even Bluesky gave me a lot more time for reading and contemplation. Next year I hope to read at least as many books, but also spend time creating art and writing for myself.

The most on-brand local shenanigans. Hit a school bus? NBD, just back yer truck through the pasture/fence and carry on. 😅 (No one was hurt.)
Snippet from a local news article:

No students were injured after a pickup truck rear-ended a school bus while stopping Tuesday at a railroad crossing.

The bus was carrying students from NJHS. Students on the bus told
WRAL News the truck driver quickly backed away, backing his way down an embankment and through a pasture, tearing down a farmer's electric tence before he drove away from the scene.

Just gotta take a moment to appreciate this 100% relatable metaphor from breastcancer.org in helping interpret imaging results.
Screenshot of the following text (with added emphasis in asterisks):

If you've got dense breasts, it can be harder for radiologists to detect breast cancer when they're reading your mammogram. This is because
cancers typically show up as White spots or masses on mammogram and dense breast tissue also appears white on a mammogram. **Just as it would be hard to spot a polar bear in a blizzard,** this makes it hard to tell the difference
oetween normal, healthy tissue and abnormal tissue. Fatty breast tissue appears dark on mammogram so it's easier to see white spots.

Last the night the partner and I were wondering if the Google AI search hallucinations of meaning for non-sensical sayings had been fixed, and the answer appears to be no. We now have a new saying, but I'm not sure if I'm proud of us or not.
Al Overview response to "what is the meaning of 'it's better to eat your beans than fart on your enemies?'"

The saying "it's better to eat your beans than fart on your enemies" is a humorous way of advising against petty and unproductive forms C revenge or conflict. It means that it is better to deal with your own problems quietly and privately than to bother or antagonize others with them.

This saying, which is a twist on the common "Beans, beans, the musical fruit" rhyme, uses a fart as a metaphor for a minor, obnoxious, and ultimately harmless act of provocation. The implied meaning is:

"Eat your beans" refers to consuming something-like the consequences of your own choices-that causes you personal discomfort, such as gas. It represents dealing with your own issues in private.

"Fart on your enemies" refers to bothering or annoying others with your own personal issues or "gas"--your anger, grievances, and petty actions. It is a pointless act that only escalates conflict and makes you look petty.

In short, the phrase is a colorful way of saying: "Handle your own mess and don't make it someone else's problem".

Vacation reads, both excellent. Forest Euphoria is a mix of a mycologist's life experiences interwoven with knowledge of various species with queer and/or non-binary existences. Before It's Gone is a sobering read on the impacts of the climate emergency and what they mean for the generations ahead.
The cover of Forest Euphoria: The Abounding Queerness of Nature by Patricia Ononiwu Kaishian. If you are a lover of nature, including fungi, snails, and "the least of these" that exist in oft overlooked spaces, you'll enjoy this book's exploration of how queerness shows up throughout our planet. The author also speaks to their personal experiences growing up in the white Euro-, hetero-centric and neurotypical dominance of the U.S. and the cultural distance created for those falling outside those parameters. The cover of Before It's Gone: Stories from the Front Lines of Climate Change in Small-Town America by Johnathan Vigliotti. Stories and reflections from a journalist and news correspondent covering the reality and impacts of climate change, from wildfires, hurricanes, tornados, crop failures, and more, emphasizing the need to act to address our warming world.

Good day from the island. (Timeline/life cleanse in progress.)
Marsh grasslands emerge from dense forests on coastal dunes.A sandy path through coastal grasses leads to bare, dead trees at the water's edge.A peek at the sound, blue sky and blue waters fading to clear at a grassy shoreline. Surrounded by other land on three sides, the waves of this nook are gentle enough that no barrier rocks are needed.A lightly clouded blue sky reflects on tbe waters of the sound, a few bare, white tree remnants remain standing in the water. A coastal oak stands to the right, sparsely leaved. Driftwood has arranged itself among tall green grass on the right. The water's edge is clear to the sand bottom.
