It was dubbed “The Burrows Pillar”, and damn if he wasn’t a pillar of sitcoms.

There was a support-beam in Monica’s apartment in the early eps of Friends. It came off the set pretty quickly - it was a bitch to direct and film around. But Burrows loved it, and when he came back to film a later-season episode, he insisted on the beam coming back into play.

My two favourite Burrows stories are both from Friends. Just before the pilot aired, he flew the cast out to Vegas, gave them walking-around money, and told them to make the most of it. Because he knew they’d never be able to be in public like that again.

We’ve lost James Burrows, and that’s a very sad thing. Multi-cam sitcoms are hokey now, a dying art, but he was an absolute master of them. Taxi, Cheers, Friends, Will & Grace - he took stage sensibility to the screen and figured out how to make the cameras perform a ballet.

Did the first table-read for a full-cast audiobook I’m narrating, and have just come outside to enjoy the post-hailstorm sun and discovered I’ve grown one stupidly perfect strawberry. A good day.

“Yes, it's terribly simple. The good guys are always stalwart and true. The bad guys are easily distinguished by their pointy horns or black hats. And, uh, we always defeat them and save the day. No one ever dies and... everybody lives happily ever after.”

Apropos of nothing (and certainly not a trailer dropping) quick reminder that Terry Pratchett was fucking great, and consuming media made by bigots is a shit thing to do! Also last year we did an episode about Gender on the Discworld with lovely messages of trans inclusion from some great people.

If I’d had a bigger word count on this book the supernatural chapter could easily have had 10,000 words on how poorly the show treats its women (and I don’t think the fandom is to blame)

010

I saw! It’s going in the post tomorrow :)

010

Finally, Riverdale. This is another everyone-is-bad/the-show-is-the-villain and I’m still not clear on wtf happened despite writing about it at length. So let’s go with Michelle Gomez as Lilith from the Sabrina spin-off, because…it’s Michelle Gomez.

Next: Once Upon a Time This is the one that made me such a staunch supporter of women’s wrongs. THE villain. Lana Parilla as Regina, the Evil Queen. Every single (Enchanted Forest) outfit was ridiculous. 10/10 no notes.

Vampire Diaries time and Katherine Pierce! The icon, the legend, the evil, the delight every time she turned up (and the way I thought “yay, they got that actress back” even though it was the main actress in a wig) Nina Dobrev should have been paid SO MUCH MORE

100

Unfortunately now it’s Glee, and the real villain is the show itself. But Naya Rivera was amazing, and Santana deserved the world. (Chaotic bisexuals all deserve the world.)

Next: Supernatural (or; fuck me women were wronged on this show) But Rowena was the most delightfully charming queen of hell I ever did see. 10/10, would let her wrong me in a heartbeat.

100

Gossip Girl: Everyone is a villain in this show but Michelle Trachtenberg (RIP) as Georgina Sparks was a masterclass in scenery-chomping, unhinged evil. I support almost all of her wrongs.

Next up: The OC Autumn Reeser came on this show in season three, after the rest of the cast had pretty much given up, and made Taylor Townsend the most charming, neurotic villain I’ve ever seen. I love her.

100

Next up: Gilmore Girls. Look, Emily Gilmore is the ✨worst✨ BUT “Only prostitutes have 2 glasses of wine at lunch!” “Then buy me a boa and drive me to Reno because I am open for business!” Is a truly great exchange.

100

First up Buffy: it has to be Faith. She does so many terrible things and I love her. Also that boob window was formative for me. (Honorable mention goes to season 1 Cordelia)

A screenshot of Faith (played by Eliza Dushku) from the Buffy episode “Faith, Hope and Trick”

Happy International Women’s Day! I’m woman-adjacent at best, but I’ve written about a lot of women in my book on American Teen Dramas (www.joannahagan.co.uk) Here’s a thread of my favourite “I support women’s wrongs” characters from each show in the book.

A white plate for dessert: panna cotta in the middle, saucy fruit (honey-roasted plums) on one side, caramelised biscuit crumbs on the other
