What's happening here? Maybe something changed part way through 2023 on urban/residential 30mph roads! I wonder if it could be that from Sep 17th 2023 95% of roads with a 30mph limit were changed to 20mph. #20splenty making your place an even better, safer, quieter, fairer place to be!

The number of casualties on those public spaces between buildings that we call roads is a choice. A choice for politicians who create an environment that works for all its citizens or prioritises those in motors. It's why 20mph or 30km/h should be the limit where people are.

It's clear from all the recent data that 25% of urban/village road casualties can be eliminated by correcting one simple human error! That error is maintaining a 30mph limit for most urban/village roads. The Safe System approach will change this to a survivable limit of 20mph.

National Strategy for 20mph Speed Limits - Scotlands Road Safety Framework
The Scottish Government is committed to the implementation of 20 mph speed limits on those roads where it is appropriate to do so, by the end of March 2026. This will help enhance road safety and create safer, more liveable communities. Our 2025 Programme for Government firms up this position with a commitment of “Making our roads safer and reducing the numbers killed or injured, through delivery of 20 mph speed limits on appropriate roads by the end 2025-26”.

The 25% is based on Stats19 police figures and is widely accepted. The 37% makes some very reasonable assumptions that casualties on unchanged roads remain the same as before or after 20mph was set. So the 25% uses raw data, the 37% uses some casualty estimates.

For the 5th consecutive year child casualties have flat-lined at around 13,000 road casualties of age 16 and under. In what other area of life would the death or injury of 13,000 children be "acceptable"? The government has a Road Safety Strategy that aims to reduce child KSIs by 70%.

Within community streets where people walking and cycling mix with motors in a planned and frequent manner then that is 20mph as a default with a higher limit only where evidentially safe. When Wales set a 20mph urban/village default it reduced casualties on lower speed roads (20mph/30mph) by 26%.
