What's happening here? Maybe something changed part way through 2023 on urban/residential 30mph roads! I wonder if it could be that from Sep 17th 2023 95% of roads with a 30mph limit were changed to 20mph. #20splenty making your place an even better, safer, quieter, fairer place to be!

It's good to see Sheffield continuing the roll-out of 20mph to all its communities. The latest Traffic Regulation Order covers Arbourthorne and Bradway.

The UK Road Safety Strategy adopts a Safe System approach with a target of a 65% reduction in KSIs by 2035. With lower urban/village 20mph implicit within a Safe System culture they will become the norm in the UK. #20splenty is making our places fit for the 21st century.

The number of casualties on those public spaces between buildings that we call roads is a choice. A choice for politicians who create an environment that works for all its citizens or prioritises those in motors. It's why 20mph or 30km/h should be the limit where people are.

It's clear from all the recent data that 25% of urban/village road casualties can be eliminated by correcting one simple human error! That error is maintaining a 30mph limit for most urban/village roads. The Safe System approach will change this to a survivable limit of 20mph.

When Wales set a 20mph limit for most urban/village roads it made walking and cycling safer. On urban/village roads there were 23.9% fewer pedestrian casualties and 26.5 fewer cyclist casualties. But the largest casualty reduction was for car/van/taxi occupants where casualties reduced by 29.2%.

Analysis of the 1st year after Wales implemented its default 20mph scheme that changed most 30mph roads to 20mph shows an overall 26.2% reduction in casualties on such streets with car, van and taxi occupants showing the largest absolute and %age reduction. Source is Stats19 data

The UK Government has committed to a Road Safety Strategy that adopts a Safe System Approach with a target of reducing KSIs by 65% by 2035. Here is what Transport Professionals are saying about how to incorporate 20mph limits into that strategy

For the 5th consecutive year child casualties have flat-lined at around 13,000 road casualties of age 16 and under. In what other area of life would the death or injury of 13,000 children be "acceptable"? The government has a Road Safety Strategy that aims to reduce child KSIs by 70%.

UN members (except USA) have committed to setting speed limits based on human tolerance to injury (survivable speed limit) in its Progress Declaration. This aligns with the UK adoption of a Safe System Approach in its Road Safety Strategy. For urban/village streets that norm is 20mph

In 2013 the UK Gov guidance on setting 20mph encouraged doing so on main roads. As progressive authorities across UK did so, it has built the evidence that 20mph main roads with previous higher speeds and pedestrian interactions record greater speed reductions and 25% casualty reductions. #20splenty

The Government in its Road Safety Strategy commits to reduce child road casualties by 70% by 2035. It also wants 60% of children walking or cycling to school by 2035. These won't be achieved if 30mph is kept as an urban/village norm. Our comment details why and how to deliver #20splenty nationally.

Transport and Road Safety Professionals are seeing a 20mph urban/village speed limit as an implicit foundation for a Safe System approach to Road Safety. It can be done either as a "national default" like Wales or a "national presumption" like Scotland. Without it you simply have an Unsafe System!

Some politicians think being anti-20mph is a "killer policy" that will win them some votes. They are right about the former! In the year before setting a 20mph default in Wales, when 20mph was only outside schools and hospitals, there were 630 more urban/village road casualties than the year after.

Parties obsessing about having 20mph limits only outside schools and hospitals are ignoring independent data showing default 20mph urban speed limits lowers casualties by 26%. Going backwards to 30mph would increase casualties by 33%, cost millions and increase load on NHS A&E.

What would you think of a driver going 50% faster than the speed limit? Reckless, dangerous, lawless..? Well what would you think of a politician setting a speed limit 50% higher than is recognised as best practice for where pedestrians and cyclists mix with motors in a planned and frequent manner?

Traffic noise is a significant Public Health factor in communities. Conclusions from another report are that "EV’s are 4-5 dB less noisy than similar ICE at low speed when driving at steady speed. But at about 30 km/h the difference in emitted noise is not significant" . See comment

If only we could take 3 countries with the same cars, laws, etc, change most 30mph speed limits to 20mph in one of them and measure the results. Wales did that and now a Senedd Research report has shown how casualties dropped, -23.8% compared to England -5.2% and Scotland +3.1%. #20splenty

Opinion of 20mph limits within the transport and road safety sector has shifted to a majority favour of 20mph as a "Safe System" urban/village norm in the last 5 years. Data across 20-30% casualty reduction, insurance reduction and minimal journey delays have tipped the balance. #20splenty

Can councils afford the waste from maintaining 30mph limits where people mix with motors? The data tells us that keeping 30mph maintains casualties 33% higher than if they were changed to 20mph. It also keeps insurance premiums higher, suppresses active travel and wastes A&E resources. #20splenty
