This is also why specifically in the broader "Chinese" context I think Rey Chow and Kuan-Hsing Chen are much more successful in engaging with postcolonial thoughts (altho from different angles) than the "Sinophone" school and certainly better than any notable "postcolonial" thinker in mainland China

Leech DuPont Liangma @1ryb.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
Obv the line isn't clear cut but the "de"colonial school often implies colonialism is something that can be "purged", whereas in Fanon (and even Quijano!) there are lots of reflections on how colonialism can't be reversed and we have to reckon with it consequences within our own societies and selves

Leech DuPont Liangma @1ryb.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
Imo the worst offence of campist misappropriation of post-/de-colonial theory is that they forget the school is supposed to be a form of self-criticism rather than accusation. This might also be one reason why Fanonian "post"colonialism is more resistant to misuse than Mignolo-esque "de"colonialism

This can be seen for example in the so-called "Paris syndrome" as well as the fact that destinations need to be "developed" for tourism which is often just another word for affective insulation Not saying tourism as it currently exists can't be fun or transformative (I enjoy it myself) but eh

Leech DuPont Liangma @1ryb.bsky.social · 25/08/2026
One of my gripes with global tourism (in addition to the obvious material problems) is that it overrides the impulse to world-travelling (in Lugones' sense) and imprisons it in an objectifying system of essentialist borders. The same goes for many other potentially transgressive practices

Rebirth has quickly becoming my new go-to stress-free late night game. Honestly amazing how much strategic depth they were able to pack into such a lightweight game Gameplay aside, the solarpunk aesthetic is gorgeous and there should really be more games that try this art style out

I feel like it's less being explicitly socialized to have those, more like the habits picked up just by living traps me in a vicious cycle... Like whenever I try to explore these issues my habits just leads me to essentialize/fetishize them, which just ends up reproducing the issue...

sigh. pathetic but entirely on brand with most of the political commentary content on e.g. bilibili, where the belittling of Southeast Asia is normalized, but also this particular trope: they act entirely according to their "western masters" and have no agency. this kind of content is profitable

The caption for it in the HKFP article that it's in reads: "A woman is taken away from indie bookstore Have a Nice Stay, escorted by police, on July 15, 2026. Photo: Kyle Lam/HKFP."

Still it was a great time. We rarely get indie musicians to come here and the performance itself is great. I especially loved how she incorporated some of the elements from her older, more "experimental" days into live interpretations of her current, more "digestible" music

Leech DuPont Liangma @1ryb.bsky.social · 16/07/2026
For example last night she literally couldn't do an encore because she can't legally perform any songs outside of the submitted setlist. As a result there's generally no opening act, the shows are short, and it just takes a lot of the free-spirits out of the show

Leech DuPont Liangma @1ryb.bsky.social · 16/07/2026
That being said I'm also reminded why I don't really go to shows anymore... It's incredibly difficult for international artists to perform in China because there's very strict control on both what & how they can perform. You have to submit what you want to perform in advance and have it deemed safe

The card design is also just really clean. Like they have so many different uses they never feel useless. It's just so elegant how they solved the "dead card" problem which has been my biggest gripe with all sorts of card-based games

It's also a rare case for a eurogame where the theme, art, & mechanics combine really well with each other, which gives you a great sense of immersion as if you are actually exploring space & discovering aliens. Many other games in the genre have great themes & art but just ends up very dry

Feel like SETI is one of those rare eurogames where even when I'm clearly losing I feel like I'm having fun because there's enough variation with cards, aliens, & player interactions to keep it interesting Maybe I just love the sci-fi theme too much but no other eurogame has given me that feeling
