Farewell #sinfulsunday; a friend I didn’t even know I needed. Taught me things, upheld me, introduced me to some of the best people on the planet. I can’t express the gift this meme & its community’s been. Big thanks & love to Molly & all who took part. This from 2021, when I was a reg contributor.

@girlonthenet.bsky.social I’m listening to Woman’s Hour this morning speaking about stealthing and thinking about you. (Also, as an aside, I wish this offence had a different name. The word ‘Stealth’ has slightly admirable sneaky/heroic vibe doesn’t it?)

When I left home my Dad made up a toolkit for me. I’ve added to it, but at its core it’s still that vintage set. I used it in my old job, & now I’m framing paintings, the friendly, worn, hickory handle of his old awl fits perfectly in mine as I go about the work. Love finds a way, even after death.
Vintage awl and hammer on a cutting board beside a painting I’m framing.

Have you got anything positive to share? It’s easy to find bad news…got anything good to tell us? We need to hear as much of it as we can muster.

I’m having to walk home because of a flat tyre, which I thought’d be a downer, but there’s such a Springy, Friday vibe on the streets, workers gathering outside pubs, tradies grabbing a tinny for the bus, kids at the ice-cream bar with pocket money, people buying good, weekend food for slow cooking.

For a while there, the radiators were ticking the exact same tick that the long-case clock ticked in my grandparents house in the 70s. I was back there for a moment. It felt so nice.

It’s national women’s day, I’ve spent some of it thinking about all the fabulous women in my life. From my wise, love-filled elderly mum to my vibrant daughters and all the amazing women I have collected on the way. I’m so happy and lucky to stand with you. xx

'The tea drinking fills the public-house, makes the frequenting of it habitual, corrupts boys as soon as they are able to move from home, and does little less for the girls, to whom the gossip of the tea-table is no bad preparatory school for the brothel.' Cottage Economy, William Cobbett, 1833
23. The drink which has come to supply the place of beer has, in general, been Zea. It is notorious that tea has no wuseful strength in it; that it contains nothing nutritious ; that it, besides being good for - nothing, has badness in it, because it is well known to produce want of sleep in many cases, and in all cases, to shake and weaken the nerves. It is, in fact, a weaker kind of laudanum, which enlivens for the moment and deadens afterwards.'The tea drinking fills the public-house, makes the frequenting of it habitual, corrupts boys as soon as they are able to move from home, and does little less for the girls, to whom the gossip of the tea-table is no bad preparatory school for the brothel.'

So the 30 days has past. I’ve irrecoverably cut my ties with the 8000 people on Twitter I used to be connected with. I thought I’d feel free, but honestly, I could cry. Now it’s just you guys (and a few in insta) Think I’d better go back to the real world to find people.

For those of you struggling to write romantic verse in Valentine cards over the next few days, don’t despair: even the great poets had to start somewhere.
Selected Early Writings of the Poets

I

the roses are red
and all the violets are blue
oh look, a haiku

- Basho

II

Roses are red,
unlike those daffs,
I wander lonely
as a giraffe cloud.

- William Wordsworth

III

Look – the roses are red!
They make my heart sing!
They fill me with hope –
Like a feathery thing!

- Emily Dickinson

IV

ROSES ARE … NO!
WHAT HAVE I DONE?
I MUST HAVE LEFT
MY CAPS LOCK ON

- ee cummings

V

Roses are dead,
see how they droop.
All of us die:
life’s only truth.

- Philip Larkin

VI

The roses had gone
(unlike my bunion)
so got this instead –
here, have an onion.

- Carol Ann Duffy
