Exactly what “standards” are those, Robert? You collude with pornographers over property deals. You take dodgy donations. You whore for racists and christofascists for personal gain. You betray your political allies, friends and your country to sniff at power. You have no standards. You’re poison.

‘Keminaissance’ is pure wishful thinking on the part of a rightwing media that furiously peddled pro-Farage propaganda until it became embarrassingly obvious that he was a raging liability and they needed to go back to the Tories as their weapon of choice.

The Times has published her fag packet numbers as if this is a credible and serious proposition… all paid for by cutting welfare and the civil service apparently… with money left over to pay off debt. As fucking if…
The Tories used Badenoch's speech to set out their plans to cut £7lbn from public spending by 2030. This included £36bn of welfare cuts and £6bn in reductions to Whitehall departmental spending. The party said this would pay for all the tax cuts and spending commitments made so far by Badenoch, as well as an extra £35.5bn that would go towards reducing the UK's debt pile.

For 14yrs, the Tories cratered our economy, added thousands to our cost of living, melted down public services and brexited us into decades of eye-watering expense and lost opportunity. That’s still their plan. With tax breaks for the super rich paid for by welfare cuts. So what TF is this headline?

This is absolutely what’s going on with Badenoch’s polling improvement. She is very much not getting any better or any more popular or electable. There is no (shoot-me-now) ‘Keminaissance’. It’s just that Farage has got even worse. And rightwing money needs a horse to back…
I can see only one major reason for this.
Various media owners, secretive sponsors of tax-averse "think tanks" and climate change-denying plutocrats, who seem determined to see normal service resumed in Downing Street as soon as possible, are having serious doubts about Nigel Farage's electability, and Badenoch remains their only other option.

Voters loathed the Tory party when they booted them out in 2024.They really needed to shake off their disgrace with humility and better ideas. They haven’t. They’ve doubled down. More Brexit, more austerity, more anti-immigration ugliness, more tedious arrogance… and no good reason to vote for them.
Party seems to have learnt nothing from 2024 defeat
John Oxley

The Conservative Party is keen to show it is now ready to return to government, two and a half years after a
historic defeat.Their self-soothing explanation posits that defeat came from not being able to do what they wanted

No such pivot is happening at the current conference. The Tories have come to Birmingham calling for a return to orthodoxy, with similar lines about cutting benefits and regulation. Even so, they seem trapped by the same contradictions
- pledging to cut benefits, but not the winter fuel payments and triple lock on pensions that go to their voters.
There is no "hug-a-hoodie" moment in Birmingham. The Conservative Party is not indicating that it has changed or seeking to broaden its appeal. It is doing the opposite: it is a party returning to its core, restating all the old ideas voters have rejected but louder.

Except it’s not a unique selling point. Farage and Reform/Restore threaten to leave the ECHR too. It’s the default position of far right populists who’d betray us all in a heartbeat (who have already betrayed us all)… It’s symbolic of their toxic corruption and incompetence.

This intensely stupid right wing idea is an extension of Brexit ignorance and prejudice. It represents the failure of our politics and our media to act in our best interests and to inform voters properly. Brexit is more than enough idiocy. Leaving the ECHR shouldn’t even be on the radar.

“A party the country still regards as toxic is determined to double down on its toxicity.” The Tories: so tedious in their relentless idiocy. Another, great cathartic piece… (loved Philp’s new name too…)
To illustrate her point, Kemi proudly drew Laura's attention to her rather desperate pamphlet The Right Way, which the Tories have published as their new credo. Six principles of Conservatism to get them through the bad times. To remind them they are right even when the country thinks they are unelectable. Kemi's Kemistry, as she hopes we will call it. The first rule is that Kemi never makes mistakes. Asked to name anything she has changed her mind about, she comes up with nothing. The laws of physics will change long before Kemi. She wants us to think of The Right Way as her foundational document that will be spoken of in hushed tones for decades to come. It will be lucky to survive
until tomorrow.

As long as the Tories are threatening to leave the ECHR, they aren’t a serious party. Consider it the ultimate red flag. Any party who’d take this entirely unnecessary and ruinous risk with our rights and our country’s security and wellbeing should never get its hands on power. (Letter, Times)
Value of the
ECHR
Sir, In dangerous times, serious countries do not retreat into splendid isolation. They build alliances, multiply their influence and strengthen institutions. Key among those is the 46-member Council of Europe, at its heart the European Convention on Human Rights. As former independent reviewers of terrorism legislation we have seen at close quarters that the ECHR is not just a human rights instrument. It is a national security asset. Terrorist networks, hostile states, organised crime gangs and people smugglers do not respect borders. Tackling them requires arrangements for the closest possible co-operation with our neighbours, including through joint investigations and police access to European passenger, fingerprint, DNA and vehicle data. These arrangements expressly depend on internationally agreed human rights standards, applied by a supranational court. We detect no political willingness to excuse the UK from compliance with standards to which the rest of Europe already subscribes. As authoritarian powers grow more aggressive and democratic institutions face mounting pressure, Britain should not be abandoning one of its greatest postwar achievements.
The question is not whether we can afford to remain within the ECHR. It is whether, in an increasingly perilous world, we can afford not to.
