Impact of colonisation on First Nations people far greater than previous estimates, research finds
Australia's Indigenous population was up to seven times larger before colonisation than previously estimated, but was devastated following the arrival of Europeans, new research reveals.

is this the kind of thing that happens to a healthy superpower in its hale and hearty period, or the kind of thing that happens when it’s empire is on the wane. 250 years to a maximum extent isn’t terrible. 500 more years of decline to go

Having a few firebrand fringe members is milquetoast. The GOP remade its entire polity by shedding its Bush I & Romney-era members via primaries and firebrand leadership. In return it has had unrivalled success and remade 100 years of legislation in short order

there is a cohort of people who are only content when they are risible. the worst thing you can do for their inner joy is give them less to complain about. turns out you actually can kill someone with kindness

I don’t often commit infanticide, but when drowning a child one shouldn’t be afraid to ask for help. if it takes a village to raise a child, it really wouldn’t be fair to monopolize the lowering part

In short - there’s no sleepwalking going on. Certain political choices are simply just not allowed to happen in US vassal states. In theory, they’re possible. In practice, exceedingly difficult, nigh impossible. All the people who decide all this in the UK went to certain kinds of school together

Corbyn was like a meeker version of Bernie. The British press is particularly rabid, especially when their class interests are threatened. Labour is Mandelson, the tories are broken, so the toffs had to choose between Farage & Polanski. They chose, and now the exercise of green-stomping has begun

Belgrade in 1998: - something like 50 murders a weekend in a city of like 4M - everyone at the club had either a gun or a grenade on them - they won like a euro basketball comp and suddenly every apartment building had someone firing their ak47 from the balcony

the lyric “women seem wicked, when you’re unwanted” did kind of predict incel/gamergate/manosphere/evangelical culture pretty presciently tbf. It’s honestly super depressing to consider how broadly disastrous to the world it’s been since we told guys that no is a valid answer

if their manifesto-posting is what they think of as their broadest, most inclusive pitch to a public audience - what beliefs remain behind the curtain, that they don’t yet want to share? what do their internal-only missives look like?

I feel like there is a data analysis piece hiding in the stats - a bit like the Vitamin D thing from all those health studies years ago. Once someone figures it out it’ll upend a whole stack of findings. It’s also a bit like SA - survey women you get one answer, run a graph on police reports another

malingerers are a thing. some fraction of us will use every angle possible to behave selfishly. excising them is critical. they will consume oxygen and step over others without compunction. it can seem innocuous but over time it becomes insidious. it sounds ridiculous given the context, but its true

They maintain the charade that they still matter, as much for themselves as for us. Facing the reality of the thing, it just can’t be stomached. So they tell us they still matter, and we support the fiction as we don’t want to face it either. But I do not see any light in that tunnel

Asking journalism to overcome these structural constraints is fair, but fruitless. Oligarchy and the tech companies decimated their income and independence. They won’t be getting back up off the mat, and trying to work them like they’re still valid umpires is just flogging a dead horse

I think they just caved. Some time ago, maybe decades. Any factual pushback, anything that wasn’t just horse race chat, got browbeaten out of them by constituencies with more heft than others. It’s only snowballed since, and is now direct editorial expectation. The old world is long, long gone

Yeah look you’re not wrong; still, it’s a solidarity thing. I think they try pretty bloody hard to maintain their dignity through more than I would ever manage. I don’t think we should give any credit, however caustic, to the people who could have an impact and do not. Their failings must be clear

I think that’s the joys of shitehousing tho - soon as one of you bobs up with something the collusion takes care of itself. they’ll savage the greens, try and inflate some Tory savior, then some post-keir alternative, and then they’ll hold their nose and go with farage.

If I used a dart thrown at a group photo to decide who to kill, I don’t then get to blame the dart to exonerate myself from the murder. I picked up the dart, I threw the dart, I killed the person the dart landed on

It won’t lead to a rift. The US will put boots on the ground in order to reopen the strait. Iran will be Gaza-fied. How bad it’s gets for the gulf states - unclear.
