Having a few firebrand fringe members is milquetoast. The GOP remade its entire polity by shedding its Bush I & Romney-era members via primaries and firebrand leadership. In return it has had unrivalled success and remade 100 years of legislation in short order

Belgrade in 1998: - something like 50 murders a weekend in a city of like 4M - everyone at the club had either a gun or a grenade on them - they won like a euro basketball comp and suddenly every apartment building had someone firing their ak47 from the balcony

pretty sure I got a pita burger slathered in burek from one of these in Belgrade in 1998. I think it’s goat cheese, kinda tastes like sour cream but is fluffier

I enjoy the word papist. Not really even sure what it means. It has brevity, but also punch. Tight little number. Other words should aspire to its use of my lips and mandible

www.joxleywrites.jmoxley.co.uk/p/airport-bo... Great piece on “airport book brain” - the tendency of politicians to swallow simplistic solutions. Latest example the Jonathan Haidt book shaping policy on teens and social media

I have seven indoor cats. 6 born in our garage as stray kittens. I will never own an outdoor cat. But, life is for living, and my cats, while safe, will never live life as fully and freely as an outdoor cat. My line in the sand is desexing. You can give your cat a life you choose, but not 6 kittens

I had neighbours with a dog like this. They bought another dog, to try and give it a buddy and hopefully settle down. Turns out the dogs viscerally hated each other, so they had to separate them at either end of the house. End result is now you have two dogs barking incessantly. We moved

why is it called antisemitism instead of just blowback. yes, there is antisemitism. but I don’t think these kinds of attacks are all of r even mostly driven by that. I think they’re blowback, just as Oct 7 was. You act with impunity, and cruelty, and there’s going to be a cruel response

It’s such a weird thing that people do - cater their views and opinions to this kind of framing. If you’re not a judge, or a journalist, or a politician, then why not just say what you think, in the way that you think it? You might be wrong, unhelpful, ignorant - so what? It’s very strange

a fascist can’t be a hypocrite. to their mind, if they do something they’ve previously said you’re doing and should be criticised for, that’s allowed, because they are better than you. The fascist believes they have every right to do the thing. Just not you

I have this thing with “rubrics” atm. As in, just about everything we believe about ourselves, others, and the world/universe at large is rubrics. The reality of the world, its essence, is not the rubric. It’s far more complex and unknowable than that.

I think we’re learning, as previous generation upon generation did, that you eventually end up having to kill a bunch of other humans to stop shit from going even further south. We got our current liberal states by killing millions of people. Hopefully next round will be less
