And if it can't speed up Moore's Law, it probably won't cure cancer either (at say an order-of-magnitude faster pace than we've been curing it already). Soz. bsky.app/profile/0xcd...

Having said that, I'm not particularly concerned about things going 'foom' in the near future. The real test is whether this is enough to make Moore's Law speed up, and to be honest, I don't think it is. bsky.app/profile/0xcd...

... is not significantly more difficult than going from International Maths Olympiad level to where we are now, which took what, a year or two?

I mean, yes, for the time being it can't produce crispy clear papers explaining the proofs. It can't write books full of beautiful and powerful new theories. But my guess would be that to go from Quasi-Riemann to making human mathematicians completely obsolete ...

But at the end of the day, if there's more information in the starting weights than what's encoded in the genome, it must have been generated during development and I'd argue that that counts as learning?
110
M @0xcd16.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Agreed re how the genome works, it's more like nudging self-organising smart agents in a certain direction than providing a blueprint.

Yes, but your refutation is handwavy at best. My point is that we now actually have a rigorous upper limit on how much evolutionary information goes into the brain and it's *tiny*.
100
M @0xcd16.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
The trouble with that is that the human genome is tiny. With an off-the-shelf compression tool (xz) you can compress it down to <650 MB, and most of that is taken up by silly stuff like liver and the heart etc. bioinformatics.stackexchange.com/questions/12...

Theoretical limit of human genome compression
How small can a compressed file containing the human genome be? I'm aware that this question cannot actually be answered, since it is asking for the Kolmogorov complexity of the human genome, which...

Imagine if someone told the kids that Trump used to refer to Farage (and to himself!) as 'Mr Brexit' and that Farage used to be proud of this. There's a reason why Farage no longer mentions it and why he's avoided the subject of Brexit ever since Burnham reopened it. bsky.app/profile/gari...

(My personal view is that by penalising posts that include links to sources, Facebook, Instagram and X have turned the internet into a toxic waste dump because ordinary users have no way of distinguishing AI slop from actual photos/videos, and tracking down the source takes a LOT of effort.)

Sticking your head in the sand is not a viable strategy. Ignoring events of this magnitude, however much you despise the protagonists, is a bit like failing to mention the fall of Paris in 1940.

Remember not to increase your weekly mileage by more than 10%, because if you do, you risk injury. (Running injuries are very strange in that they're more like RSI than say rugby injuries.) So to be on the safe side, I'd wait for 18 years before running the next 10k 😉
