yesterday a friend reminded me of the setae on the femurs of large lucanid beetles that they use to clean their antennae and i thought of a mammal analog in "using your armpit hair as a cleaning swab for your eyes and nostrils"

update on raising Tettigonia cantans katydids: so after the latest moult, the ovipositor grew from 7,5 mm to 16 mm and now it just looks ridiculous 😭 second pic is probably sub-adult

Away trip to Eype beach near Bridport yesterday in glorious Spring weather. Lots of Cepero's Groundhoppers on the seepages, in a wide variety of colours and patterns. Great to see this scarce species which is almost completely limited in the UK to the south coasts of England and Wales.

I love it when parasites/parasitoids get funky and convoluted with their life cycles - as is the case with the parasitoid wasp genus Orasema which are parasitoid of ants 🐜🧪 hymenoptera.ucr.edu/sites/defaul...
Life cycle diagram of the Orasema parasitoid wasp, by University of California, Riverside.
Caption text reads:
"Wasps in the genus Orasema (family Eucharitidae) mate outside the nest. Females deposit eggs into vegetation using a special expanded ovipositor. Eggs are laid into leaves, bracts of flowers or even the peel of a banana. Eggs are often laid near to an extrafloral nectary (EFN). Ants pick up the hatched larvae (planidia) by feeding at the nectary, direct phoresy or by feeding on thrips with attached planidia. Ants carry the wasp larvae back to the nest where they are transferred to the ant larva. Planidia first attack the ant larva as internal parasitoids but then develop as external parasitoids of the ant pupa. After killing the ant pupa and leaving a living carcass, the wasp pupate and emerge in the nest. Specialized chemicals allow them to live with the ants for a short time, but they must leave the nest to meet their mates and start the cycle again."
