📉📈 Half-Past Four is the New Five O’Clock in More Efficient Workday archive.ph/PNdyP The average American workday now ends 42 minutes earlier than two years ago. Despite the shorter workday, overall productivity has increased by about 2%. #laborEconomics #work #EconSky orig … 1/2

The workforce has become more productive for decades. The problem is that money earned from increased productivity went to the top only!! And we still don’t have healthcare unless beholden to a corporation. The ACA still benefits private insurers.

Maybe working from home isn’t as bad for productivity as some believe?

Interesting trend! It seems like companies are realizing that less can be more when it comes to productivity. A 42-minute cut and still seeing gains? Guess it's time to rethink our schedules and prioritize efficiency over hours clocked in! #WorkSmart

Also this!

Screen capture from article. In summary, author notes that weekend work is on the rise as a substitute for week day working

This isn’t paid time. This is start and end times. I would bet the reason is more due to shorter lunches than fewer minutes worked.

This is mentioned in the Bloomberg article (and I admit I haven't read the study) -- this feels very obviously tied to RTO and return of the commute.

In the late 70s, as a cashier in the vault of the Midwest Stock Exchange, I counted stocks physically, then in a banks Trust dept. processing loan transactions, all done manually. We used microfiche machines to look up records too. So computers not really saving that much time? Hmmm. No paid lunch?

Correlation is not to be confused with causality. It may equally be that the productivity would increase even further if not for people knocking off early.

I loved hiring working Moms! gave flexible hours. Working Moms (BTW, I was one) focused on getting it done; according to childcare support/get home to their kids. We were the most productive team in our company. We worked on average, 30 hours a week. Meet employee needs; see productivity skyrocket

Productivity is a measurement -- a numerator (amount of work done) over a denominator (amount of time spent working). So... if the same amount of work gets done in a bit less time, then 𝑏𝑦 𝑑𝑒𝑓𝑖𝑛𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 the productivity increases by a couple of percentage points.

That's a lot of time spent on something that barely pays enough to pay bills. Why not pay their bills for them and pay them enough on top for fun and to support their interests. There's a business idea: be a " bank" with direct deposit, collect customers

Franklin @btsupe.bsky.social · 19/03/2025

That means they steal more of your value (your productivity) and pay you 42 minutes less. Work slower & more deliberate, anything more and you screw over your coworkers.
