Hi. There is some drama over on LawyerThreads. There’s a lawyer (who is also very active on Facebook) who is out in the world saying that the law is neutral. Just want to chime in as a career public defender and say THE LAW IS NOT AND NEVER HAS BEEN FUCKING NEUTRAL. 🧵

The law is not neutral as long as unneutral people decide who to stop, frisk, arrest, charge, and sentence. Especially not with this FedSoc hand-picked Supine Court.

The law is a tool of established classes, supposed to be neutral, but rarely is, affected by everything from financial circumstances in crafting defenses to what is policed. The first thing villains do, moreover, when in power is change the law in their favor. The law has supported awful things.

Trying to imagine what kind of life you have to lead before becoming a lawyer that would let you think "the law is neutral." I know that's a judgemental comment, but it's either that or they're in some major denial regarding the profession they have chosen and how they fit in it.

Just because something is "law" doesn't automatically make it right or just. Far too many people don't understand this.

Kind of like the Powell Memo was neutral according to Powell. Who was Dredd Scott anyway? Funny how red states immediately started gerrymandering maps in anticipation of this ruling. Memphis would have no black representation. Approx 63% black voting bloc thus dismantled.

Wild. I don’t know how anyone who has actually practiced law could believe the law is neutral. I could see how academics may believe this idealized and sanitized version, but in practice it’s anything but.
