This is literally true. School vouchers were pioneered as a way to help white supremacists send their kids to a new wave of private "segregation academies" created expressly for the purpose. From my book WHITE FLIGHT:

School vouchers are a re-segregation tax, in which everyone is forced to pay the most racist white people so they can avoid sending their kids to schools with minorities. The only plus side is that the schools suck and don't help their kids get into better colleges. 🙏

Sure, but abortion and birth control have racist pasts as well. This is a bit of the genetic fallacy. I’m not a huge fan of vouchers but I also have the capital to choose my kids’ schools in ways others can’t. There are compelling, good faith arguments for vouchers that can’t be reduced to racism.

Again, this is not to say vouchers have a good history or are in fact good! It’s only to say we need better arguments to oppose them than that people who like or use them (who might well be people of color) are racists or that the institution has a racist history.
