BREAKING NEWS: The impeachment vote of South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, following his shocking martial law decree that stunned the nation, has FAILED. 105 of 108 of his party's lawmakers boycotted the vote and the National Assembly didn't meet the threshold to pass the motion.

So, the practice run at authoritarian takeover was successful.

Has anyone interviewed the ruling party lawmakers or their aides or Korean politics experts about the thinking going on here? None of the speculation has been helpful, frankly.

Hammering the law when it’s convenient then taking a big 💩 on it when one of your own crosses the line. And no matter how much. The bigger the crime the bigger the 💩. The zen of conservatives the world around.

That's disappointing. There needs to be another option to remove a president

Calling up South Korea like my best friend who needs support right now "hey girl, just checking in on you ❤️❤️, who hasn't had a desperately needed impeachment fail. Love you so much, stay strong"

Alt: Kpop idol with red hair is getting a comforting hug from another kpop idol with blue hair. Idk much about kpop so idk who these kids are but it felt appropriate and they look so sweet and wholesome together

Checks on presidential power rarely work. Maybe the problem is the office of the president itself. Presidents are kings—elected and with time-limited reigns, maybe—but kings nonetheless.

Genuine question: did they think they had the votes? Or was this a reasonably foreseeable outcome?

Sounds as though the ruling party in the Korean parliament are as dumb and corrupt as the Republicans who keep protecting Trump

Do you think the Ruling party was even thinking about their future for re-election when they boycott the voting for impeachment? I know a few came back but Yoons stunt pissed off a lot of people on both sides. Party line is one thing but your chances of coming back into the Assembly is another.

Seems like the failure of USA had become inspirational material for every single "conservative" party everywhere—laws mean nothing. Do we really live in the world where the only effective checks and balances are the ones someone would engrave upon the bullet casings? A terrible day for democracy.

Be vigilant. Your colleagues error in judgement puts your democracy and civil liberties at risk. Without negative consequences, his actions will be normalized.
