I'm surprised that such an American classic has been banned in areas of the country. I'm reading the book, New English Canaan, by Thomas Morton, which made history for being the first banned book in the US. Written in the 1600s, it reveals how poorly the Puritans treated the indigenous people.

My grandfather was a High School English teacher, and naturally, an avid reader. I am so fortunate to have been introduced to this favorite author of his, and I now possess his first and early edition copies.

I read this when I was in grade school, probably "borrowed" from my brothers who would have been reading it for high school English. Loved it, it's probably one of the reasons I became interested in social justice at an early age.

I read and understand the grapes of wrath but it only looks at it for poor white people who had no problem when it was done to black people for decades before them. It’s a good read though 😒

At Monterey's Cannery Row, there is a bust of John Steinbeck to commemorate his works and his hometown. I grew up in the San Jose. Spent many times in the area SCUBA diving there. Steinbeck wrote about the earth in ways I could understand them then. That was in the 1960's.
