happy football season, quick reminder that sportsbooks win about 3% of your money on straight football bets, but almost 20% on parlays and same-game parlays. which is why they have all the ads for those and not regular bets (info via NJ Dept. of Gaming Enforcement monthly report, July 2025)

as someone who makes money betting on sports, here's my guide to being a Winning Bettor —bet the promos sportsbooks give you in hopes you will start making bets with worse odds —only bet those promos —not a promo? don't bet it —only bet the best promos bc most of them are actually still -EV

About 15 years ago I did some research in grad school on the psychology of sports gambling - focusing just on basic point spread betting and the house odds there. Parlays are so, so incredibly dumb for bettors.

I have a friend who several years ago did a 10-game parlay doing the opposite of all of his straight single-game bets as a hedge…and hit it. After seeing that, I can live with the Bizarro Hedge Parlay, and that’s about it.

Counterpoint: The 21-year-old kid who just invented the concept of parlaying a bunch of heavy favorites on the moneyline told me it's a sure thing. He also kind of wondered why nobody had ever thought of such a thing before, but wrote it off with the conclusion that he's "just built different."
