Great article. I grew up in the US, but spoke Tâi-gí at home. Went back to Taiwan to visit a few years ago, and communicating with my limited Mandarin skills was tough. It was discouraging to see how few people speak Tâi-gí in Taiwan.

Thanks! It was fun to research and write. I've met quite a few Taiwanese Americans who speak better Tâi-gí than Mandarin. As I try to go the other way, I'm struck by how different the two languages are. Like Danish and English: I hear Danish and think, "It feels like I should understand, but..."
