"Is X-ray crystallography dead?" some asked when cryoEM got momentum. Depends on what you work on. For nucleosomes it certainly looks like it is dead: all structures with nucleosomes released in 2023 were cryoEM structures! @nucleosomepolice.bsky.social guillawme.github.io/insights-fro...

(The big slow-down caused by the quarantines during the COVID-19 pandemic is also very apparent when comparing the bars for 2019 and 2020...)

It’s not a competition rather the choice of a tool based on the problem at hand. Sometimes Cryo is the choice, other times x-rays. Maybe you could say the same about put AF2 making Cryo EM redundant? I think educate yourself on the techniques and your problem and go from there.

also, especially in case of nucleosomes, a numbers game. the amount of material required is so much less.
