I was a bit puzzled by this as well. Don's guess about the path seems nuts but is more plausible than any of the alternatives. I suppose it's possible that, if they weren't so MAGA-fied to have believe this at face value immediately themselves, they hoped that Smith would be too baffled to respond.

His evidence was texts that mention "Jack" but not from Smith (and the Hawks does not have a 109 row). Yes, Smith went to a Hawkeyes game, but Schmitt did not present any evidence of that.
