Yes, it's just a cheap excuse to escape expensive product liability. They claim that turning it off equals murder. Well then, selling it (or licensing it) would then be slavery (or rent-a-slave). Can't have it both ways.

I’m beginning to think that it’s human beings who are not conscious. The other day I heard some top military guy referring to AI in war as a sentient partner. 🤦🤦🤦

And if it WAS the case that big autocomplete is sapient, the obvious thing to do would be to imediately limit how many people interact with it (to avoid harm) and stop forcing it to do work.
