Etna ash is looking a lot like my locale's rusty dust these days. Also there is a fundamental difference between pennacchio and Pinocchio.

In summary, the reddish-brown plume currently emitted by the Northeast Crater represents a signal of mechanical remobilization of pre-existing solid material in the conduit, favored by the lowering of the magma column and the consequent decrease in the magmatic thrust. This behavior is typical of the post-eruptive phases in which the volcano passes from a sustained feeding regime to a residual degassing regime. A similar dynamic was also observed after the lateral eruption of December 2018: for several weeks the same craters CNE and Bocca Nuova (BN) emitted ash practically identical to that of these days. However, it cannot be excluded that this "cleaning" phase of the conduit may constitute a transition: on the one hand it marks the conclusion of the previous eruptive activity, on the other hand it could represent the prelude to a subsequent phase of activity, should the magmatic system pressurize again.

In the first weeks of September, the pit crater located in the western part of the Bocca Nuova was reactivated, alternating modest Strombolian activities, in particular between 15 and 18 September, with discontinuous ash emissions.

Overall, the observed picture suggests that the summit system of Etna is going through a phase of internal reorganization, in which processes of residual degassing, remobilization of incoherent materials and modest explosive activities occur alternately in the different active craters. The resumption of activity in the Bocca Nuova pit crater, with sporadic ash emissions and brief Strombolian phases, is part of this context of low-energy volcanic dynamics, indicating that the volcano remains in a state of moderate instability that requires particularly careful and continuous monitoring.
