Media discovering groypers for the first time reminds me of when they first encountered incels. Those of us who study misogyny or followed Gamergate had been screaming about incel culture and violence for years. Coverage of hate groups is far too reactive.

A growing online incel community that called mass shooter Elliot Rodger "St. Elliot" was going to produce more shooters. But, no one listened. Similarly, the media has largely ignored the role of groypers in 1/6 and Samuel Gulick firebombing a Planned Parenthood clinic.

One thing I still see in normies of my age that I talk to in real life is an abiding belief that on-line is “not real life.” But in a lot of ways it is. And viewing on-line culture as some sort of sideshow (even refusing to see it AS a culture) is a huge blind-spot.

Groypers have levied attacks on Trumpists from the right on multiple occassions, disrupting events by, among others, Kirk and Trump Jr. We don't know that Tyler Robinson was a groyper yet. But, the media shouldn't need to play catchup about a powerful white supremacist hate group. /end
