1. England has 13.5% of natural forests remaining. We are in the middle of a global biodiversity crisis. Native tree planting is essential.
2. 500,000 trees over 3 years is incredibly unambitious. Greater Wellington, with a population of 534,000, planted one million natives since 2019.
In terms of messaging, this is very positive, and a big shift from the nature-hatefest of the Starmer administration.
Mind you, most tree-planting is unnecessary: I'd like to see much more emphasis on natural regeneration. 🧵
