I watched Cameron Luxton a few weeks ago in the WWF fisheries debate and it was clear he had a pretty poor grasp of how fisheries work. Not surprised to see the release today building on that theme. It will be popular with some Auckland recreational fishers. www.rnz.co.nz/news/politic...

ACT announces plans for fisheries reform, would impose shellfish bag limits and increase fines

ACT has announced plans to impose a nationwide daily bag limit of 10 shellfish if elected, as part of their wider plan to rebuild fish stocks and protect vulnerable marine environments.

There are 6 key points to this policy. I'm starting at 2 as 1 takes a bit more explaining and I'll do it last. There is already a nationwide combined limit of 50 for all crabs, limpets, starfish, periwinkles, whelks, barnacles, koura, cats eyes & sea cucumbers. So this isn't new.

large-scale stripping of vulnerable rock pools and
intertidal areas.

Reducing the bag limit might make a difference but enforcement is the real issue. There aren't enough fisheries officers out there keeping an eye on things.
