I got to visit some of my old planting sites this week. Always nice to get to these areas and see how things are progressing. I did 100% harakeke on the wet, flat area here because we were having major issues with frosts. More diversity on the hill where it's warmer. July 2021 vs February 2026.

July 2021. Before planting. Kānuka on the hill planted before my time 2018.

July 2021. Before planting. Sprayed spots visible. Ephemeral wetlands still show the ghosts of the old stream before the drains were cut into the peat.

February 2026. 4.5 years after planting. A few bald patches on the hill but mostly pretty good. Harakeke especially brings in the birds.

February 2026. Harakeke in foreground is 4.5 years old and kānuka in middle is 6.5 years old. Planting at the back was done 2022.

July 2019 vs February 2026. Alot of different people involved in this area and many additional hours of weed control but it's looking really good now.

I wasn't involved in planting either of these kānuka patches but it's useful to show the different age classes. 7.5 years vs 2.5 years (2018 vs 2023). Kānuka can grow over a metre a year in good conditions.
