I can see the argument, I think I’m just terrified that bit by bit it’ll do what every other social media has: homogenise and become useless. I think my specific objection to “trending” is it’s nothing to do with community or following. It’s algorithmic manipulation

I think Bluesky has done well here as they’re putting the trending behind search instead of at the side panel so you have to be looking for new stuff instead of it being fed to you next to the feed

This is a good thing that it’s not in the side, though on mobile when you search, it now automatically takes up the top half of the screen. All the game theory we know tells us most people won’t switch this off, and most people will start tapping trends. For me it’s still a bad sign, sadly
