If you do not have a reality-based business model, then it is entirely possible that UX has no value. Lying to customers about the value of the product (because the choosers aren't the users, like in B2B) or playing games with VC funding don't require UX. They just need a fancy UI slapped on top.

For a while, the consensus was "UX makes the pictures" but that consensus is broken by shitty, heavily subsidized AI. If you're asked "why can't AI replace you?" then your environment has no way to judge *quality* of outputs beyond "designerly taste." Fix that, and the answer becomes obvious.

it's interesting because i've been in the UX-o-sphere for like 20 years now, before "UX" was even the umbrella concept, and the whole "seat at the table"/"ROI of design" trope was well-worn by the time i got there

what's funny about "UX makes the pictures" is prior to memphis 2009 there were actually distinct toeholds for interaction design (process) and information architecture (structure) and content strategy (message)

When VCs make you think you have infinite runway, you can fool yourself into believing that iterating into "product-market fit" is possible and achievable. Well, first of all you need to establish a reliable signal to measure, and that's also UX. Otherwise you have built a confirmation bias machine
