Remote workers are 40% more productive than those same workers in the office. And most of us spend those in-office days on Zoom ANYWAY, talking to people in other offices. But it makes managers sad that they can't physically see their peasants toiling in the fields, so out you go!

A remote worker wins back 5+ hours of time per week (not to mention the cost of gas or fare), simply because they do not have to spend that time commuting. Now companies are saying, wow since you're giving us that time for free anyway, we might as well have you working too.

Then we get to the form factor trap — when managers "get ideas" by looking at other products that have e.g. dashboards and say "we should add a dashboard." The feature is lifted wholesale without understanding why it's there. We have Teams on the computer, we have a computer in the car. Ergo...

This also depends on the fact that (in my experience) it doesn't even occur to most people to block off their travel time on their calendar so people can't schedule over it... even when they're specifically told about the concept.

High quality thread here. I left Amazon because they went from three days in office to five. I was doing three half days in the office to avoid traffic. I really hated getting a meeting room for a presentation and having my physically present co workers attend virtually.
