Managers don't understand that these are actually 2 different tests; to them it is undifferentiated "work." This gets exponentially worse up the chain; until the CEO has no clue what the company does. Abstracted from context, this creates the impression of a competent AI and incompetent employees.

Of course, managers who try to replace their team with AI quickly find that it is completely incapable of passing the same test, for three reasons. One is that AI can *do tasks* but expertise is not just a string of tasks. Two is hallucination; the tasks it does do, it doesn't do well.

I saw a talk earlier today by someone from OpenAI and this is exactly what I thought. The rep kept saying the model was "as smart as a PhD in every subject" but every example was essentially reproducing something somebody already did, which is not how or why you get a PhD

But three is the biggest issue: AI does not and cannot have initiative. When a manager gives vague instructions to a team, that team can at least use their human brains to extrapolate, fill in the gaps, ask follow-up questions, push back on requirements. The process of building creates clarity.
