Let's start with "technology is neutral" as a phrase. This is just a deflection. Oh, your iPhone is a technology, your toilet is a technology. It's just *stuff.* This is a fundamental (often willful) misunderstanding of how systems work in society (not surprising from STEM types).

I'm actually not against the "toilet is a technology" argument because we can take it all the way back to "language is a technology" and language is one of the least neutral things there is. But the tech bros aren't talking about *the use* of technology, just evoking lab coats and safety glasses.

Its not just about the tools and materials used to assemble technology, but also how said technology is meant to be used, how people frequently use it etc. LLM are used to plagarize essays, do research, compile data. "AI" "art" machines are just compiling artwork from across the world, no source

The tendency to evoke specific aesthetics as a way to whitewash what they are actually doing is shared between tech and a certain political movement but let's not go there for now. Notably, chief hype artists Sam Altman and Elon Musk loooove to evoke not just tech but *science* specifically.

Not sure I'd agree that language is a technology. Writing is a technology. But it's not like language is something exogenous to the person using it.
