Pavel @spavel.bsky.social · 05/04/2025Tech people like to say things such as "it's not the what, it's the how" or "the product manager owns the why and developers own the how" It's important to remember that none of this actually means anything. The purpose of these phrases is only to make the speaker seem smart and shut down dissent. 1233834
Who's A Grumpy Bear? @whosagrumpybear.bsky.social · 05/04/2025I dunno... as a developer, I don't really want to care about the why. Just tell me what to make. I don't get paid enough for that shit 😆 Unless it's like, I'd actually get credit for it and a yearly raise that at least meets YoY inflation and *gasp* profit-sharing. Then I might actually care. 210
yambi - wishlist You Belong in the Stars on steam @yambidev.bsky.social · 06/04/2025When reality is too shitty to sell people have to sell fantasies. If a product manager would be useless companies without one would dominate. Developers can make great things, and we can work very efficiently on our own, but we can't sell shit alone 000
Pavel @spavel.bsky.social · 05/04/2025These are classic "briefcase words" in the sense that, to mean anything, you have to unpack them. "The what" can just as easily mean "what is the outcome" as "what is the output" - or even "what is the goal". "The how" can mean the technology or the strategy or anything in between. 1341

Dax Pryce @dax.pryce.io · 05/04/2025These sayings are brought out after enough of us get burnt by project managers who promise to, say, rewrite the entire IRS mainframe in visual basic 6, in 6 weeks, without asking anyone "how can this be done". 160
Nick Pelling @nickpelling.bsky.social · 05/04/2025Being reductive like this is a project manager wet dream because it disempowers everybody apart from them. Good code decisions are almost always informed by the business they're embedded in, not shielded from it. 020
Aaron Bossig @aaronbossig.bsky.social · 05/04/2025It's been my experience that the person who sounds smartest is the one who dispenses with all the "cute" phrases and starts talking about what needs to be done, and why. But corporate america has them all afraid to be the first. 000
