"AI for sustainability" is just Effective Altruism with extra steps. A cult where "Build AGI" is the answer to all questions: - AI hallucinates? Build AGI. - AI is an environmental catastrophe? AGI will save us. - People hate AI products? AGI will come up with good use cases for itself.

It's the epitome of single-loop learning: try thing, see if it worked, try the same thing harder. The sort of thing a machine would do, ironically enough, except it's called a FOR loop and doesn't need AI to function.

Single-loop processes are not able to ask "is the thing we are doing working" but perhaps more importantly, they cannot ask "is the thing we are working towards worthwhile?" In all 3 cases, the answer of AI boosters is the same: we are building AI so that we can have AI.

Three loops connect at one inception point. They are labeled: Is this the right problem to solve? Do the requirements describe the best solution to this problem? Does the implementation meet the requirements?
