This is actually a great example of why anthropomorphizing AI is a mistake - it serves as a shield for the people who are actually responsible for it. "ChatGPT made a mistake" - no. ChatGPT *is* the mistake.
Understanding that all tech is flawed is one thing but it is actively against standards of engineering to release systems to the public that cannot reasonably be debugged or fixed or explained.
If any one needs to ask for forgiveness it's the engineers. And they won't be forgiven.
