6. Never ever miss an opportunity to sharpen your damfucken pencil. Whether shading or detailing. Sharpen. Always.✏️ 🔪 #ArtNoteToSelf

Two columns of three circles each, shaded in colour pencil in blue and greens. The first column is labelled 'sharpened' and the circles in it are very evenly and smoothly shaded. The second is labelled 'not sharpened' and the circles in it have shading that looks less even and more rough.

A WIP shot of a Fritillaria flower head being drawn in colour pencil. It has 3 bell-shaped, speckled, 6-petalled flowers on a narrow stem with small oval leaves next to each flower stalk.

5. Art is political. [Gestures at art history.] It has always been & will always be political. Even the choice to make not-obviously-political art is a political choice, & one that can be made in many ways. If someone asks you to draw a house & the house is on fire, draw flames. #ArtNoteToSelf

Also true for woodcarving tools. It's too easy to get in the zone and not want to stop to take care of your tools!

I agree in theory, but also I have a set of ancient prismacolors that I think are shattered inside, because sharpening just brings tears as I sharpen and then the point falls off. T-T
