Prebble's work is interesting for the personal stories. I'd recommend Donald Macleod's 'Gloomy Memories' (rare first hand accounts of the Strathnaver clearances) and Alexander Mackenzie's 'The History of the Highland Clearances' (recognised by academics as an important part of the knowledge base).

John Prebble is a great author and in this book he does a great job of telling the story of how so many highlanders were ill-treated by people they trusted. I've re-read most of his Scottish history books many times.

I read that many years ago. Heartbreaking. More recently, author Peter May wrote a novel which included some vivid descriptions of the impact of the clearances. I think the book title is “Entry Island” or something like that.
