It’s Oscar Week 1974, and TV Guide’s Judith Crist is out with her list of the eight most enduring motion pictures of all time.

CRITIC'S CHOICE
Eight movie milestones
By Judith Crit
There is a feast on hand for everyone of every taste in "The Movies," a four-hour, two-part spectacular scrapbook of Hollywood's memorable (whether major or minor) manufactures of the past 60 years. Bits and pieces of 110 movies, 52 of them Oscar winners, representing the work of 80 noted directors,
have
been assembled under the supervision of one of the most
distinguished,
George Cukor-and some of your fav-orites, without a doubt, will be on hand.
But what are the "landmarks" of our moviegoing lives? Each of us has his own, depending on how we've traveled the Hollywood route. Some of us think of technical milestones ("The Jazz Singer" for sound, Mickey Mouse for animation); some of sci-fi ("The War of the Worlds," "2001: A Space Odyssey"). some of spectacle ('Cleopatra," "San Francisco"), some of joyous warmth
("The Wizard of Oz," "Meet Me in St.
Louis," "Singin' in the Rain). The landmarks I have chosen are films that were for me the first (and in some cases the last as well) to raise my moviegoing consciousness, to open new vistas for the vision of movie possibilities, to explore areas hitherto untried by movies. They are a handful among the many Hollywood films that have told us more about ourselves, per-haps, than we were previously ready
—or willing—to know. But above all they are films that time cannot dimin-ish-and does, perhaps, enhance.

City Lights: This
masterpiece of the
screen's greatest artist is the embodiment of every aspect of Chaplin's genius, offering us the heroics,
the
hilarity and the heartbreak, the suffering and survival that made The Tramp our Everyman.
Little Caesar: Edward G. Robinson's portrait of the gangster— power-hungry, ruthless and surface sentimental endures as a fundamental truth in its social and psychological implications, stripped of "The Godfather's" romantic schmaltz, still chilling and topical in its implication.

King Kong: Beyond its status
as a
technical milestone in its blend of
horror-monster-science-fiction genres and effects, this film provides the thoughtful with allegorical considerations of man's inhumanity to man, and civilization's destruction of the innocent.
Gone
with the Wind: The best and
most durable piece of popular entertainment to come out of Hollywood, this spectacular epitomizes the opulence of cinematic magic and romanticism, its
"true" movie stars and the intel-
ligent taste of the moviemaker
sur-
mounting its glorious excesses.
The Grapes of Wrath: This great 20th-century "Western" transcends the history it documents, to stand as the timeless story of men of the soil, uprooted and made migrant by their search for human dignity.
STAF-
Citizen Kane: This great American film not only changed the sight and sound of many films that followed it but also remains as an original and revealing exploration of the media mogul, a major power force in our century.
Hud:
Going beyond the antihero in
its portrait of an amoral man, uncaring, alien-and triumphant, this film points to an unpleasant truth about an element of our society.
Patton: This brilliant study of "the perfect warrior-a magnificent anachro-nism" made us accept the fact that even a hero, "a legend in his own time," could be faced as a man and evaluated as a human being.
