True, but I'm not sure Bush Sr would have been the right man for the Cold War as it stood in 1980. He guided the USSR to a controlled implosion in 1991, for which he should be on Mt. Rushmore, and then Americans wanted a new best friend and kicked him out.

In 1980 America was looking for an inspirational figure, and elected Reagan for that reason. HW Bush was very competent, but not really a motivating personality.

"Should be on Mt. Rushmore" seems a bit hyperbolic, but GHWB certainly didn't get the huge statesman credit he deserved for that remarkable achievement (just don't undersell the "it takes two to tango" aspect of having Gorbachev as his counterpart).

Do you think Carter would be remembered differently if you just magically flipped him with Clinton's time? I feel like the problems that screwed over Carter were largely outside of his control and it annoys me how effective the GOP has been at poisoning his name/presidency.

My memory of the end of the Cold War is that Bush seemed like a deer stopped in headlights by the collapse of the world order he'd always assumed would be permanent.

The HW Bush team with Baker and Scowcroft and Webster et al never getting the recognition let alone the major award they deserved for '89-92 is, IMO, one of the things that allowed the wolves to eventually eat the GOP. It was probably the greatest act of diplomacy since 1945.

i would always rate President Bush Sr higher than President Reagan. Gipper was a great actor and will always hold the electoral margin tidal wave in his favor but he was also lucky to have a democrat party completely lost in the 80’s in terms of viable Presidential candidates
