Cyriak @cyriak.bsky.social · 09/09/2025Amazing that before sandwiches were invented there weren't enough things between other things to bother making up a word for it 11104
Cyriak @cyriak.bsky.social · 09/09/2025Like, the concept of a sandwich was so revolutionary, they didn't even have existing words they could use to make a new word for it. Instead they had to name it after some guy 3520
Anfor @anforsorrow.bsky.social · 09/09/2025Important to note that guy was also an Earl, so using his name was also a way to make you sound "fancy" when making a sandwich. 18th and 19th century English (and Europeans in general) were very into aristocracy. 000
Cyriak @cyriak.bsky.social · 09/09/2025They didn't even have a name for the guy who invented the sandwich. They were just like, well he's from sandwich, lets call him that. Thats how revolutionary the concept was, there were no words to even describe the man who came up with it 3552
Dr. Alfred Neccesiter @dr.necessiter.org · 09/09/2025The whole thing reeks of conspiracy to me. There was probably some guy named Stubbins who actually invented it years prior, but this Sandwich guy hated him and stole all the glory. Admittedly though, it would be odd to eat a toasted cheese stubbins. 100
