My mum (Kathleen Flynn) came from a very working class family and grew up in a tenement block in Dalry, Edinburgh. She loved school and was a huge advocate of education and she was rightly proud of her academic achievements as reported in the Edinburgh Evening News (1938 and 1939 respectively).
