I've spent some time last night and this morning looking at Trump's Russian diesel announcement. Putting the political implications aside for a moment, I wanted to work through the cargo involved and see if I can determine the operational impacts. The numbers are revealing.

Trump says Russia will supply 300,000 tonnes of diesel immediately, 500,000 in November and another million afterwards. A further 3 million tonnes depends on Russian refinery capacity. It is important to note these are announced quantities, not confirmed deliveries with schedules and timings.

It is hard to quantify in tonnes what the impact is, so I need to do some calculations. Petroleum cargos are normally standardised to 15°C. For this calculation I'm using a diesel density of 835.9 kg/m³ at 15°C, or 0.8359 tonnes per cubic metre. This allows us to compare volumes consistently.
