1/8 Yesterday I was asked a question live on @lbc.co.uk by @mrjamesob.bsky.social : What happens if the United States intercepts a Chinese cargo vessel in the Strait of Hormuz? At the time, I said I didn’t want to think about it. Since then, I have. #Hormuz #MaritimeSecurity

2/8 I can lay out my reasoning and explain this as simply as I can. The obvious framing is oil. But that’s too simple, and too politically charged. There are other cargoes moving through Hormuz that are just as critical to how the modern world functions. #GlobalTrade #SupplyChains

3/8 I need a globally critical cargo, that is politically neutral and otherwise unremarkable. Take helium. Essential for semiconductors, fibre optics, MRI systems and advanced computing. It underpins the digital economy far more than most people realise. #AI #Semiconductors

I'm not convinced that it matters whether it's oil or not: the key is that China is a third party which happens to be the second most powerful country in the world, and is not party to America's insane squabbles. It would equally apply to a Vietnam ship, and their history with the US isn't relevant.
